Getting’ down in Bricktown
Criss-crossed by streets bearing the names of famed Okies like Mickey Mantle, Johnny Bench, Charlie Christian, Vince Gill and Joe Carter, Bricktown rises like a phoenix in the heart of Oklahoma City. "Bricktown is our entertainment district," says Matt Marcacci, a Realtor with First Source Real Estate. "It was an old warehouse district that was essentially abandoned before we as a city voted to implement the Metro Area Projects program. The city built a canal and triple-A ballpark and revitalized the area into a thriving entertainment district." It’s a neighborhood of converted warehouses and modern high-rising mixed-use centers, paying homage to the past while becoming a thriving, beating spot that draws folks from across Oklahoma City and beyond.
Fun and games abound
There’s no lack of options when it comes to eating, drinking, shopping and nightlife in Bricktown, in what were once abandoned brick warehouses. National and regional chains are represented, as well as local options like The Joinery restaurant, where folks can enjoy a cold beer while practicing their swing in their second-floor golf simulator bar after they grab a Piggyback pulled pork sandwich. For an upscale dining experience, Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse – named after perhaps the most famous Okie to play in the majors – offers a deep menu of steak and seafood dishes alongside a world-class wine and spirits selection. For fun and games, folks head to Brickopolis, with mini-golf, laser tag and arcade games alongside pub grub and beverages for the whole family. Painted Door gift boutique features jewelry, apparel, home décor, Oklahoma products and more, while Bass Pro Shops is ready to outfit the outdoorsy. Residents wanting to cook at home will have to swing by OKC Market or Homeland for groceries, unless they can do their shopping at the weekly Oklahoma Farmers Market, open every Saturday.
Plenty of ways to get around
Getting around Bricktown is a breeze thanks to comprehensive public transport as well as easily walkable streets and plenty of bike lanes. Eight commercial airlines fly out of Will Rogers World Airport, just 10 miles southwest of Bricktown, generally only a 15-minute drive or so. St. Michael’s Hospital is close by for round-the-clock emergency care, only two miles away from the heart of the community. While there are no churches within the borders of the neighborhood, nearby neighborhoods offer places of worship for a variety of faiths.
Take me out to the ball game
At the center of Bricktown is the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, home of the Oklahoma City Baseball Club Triple-A team. A farm club for the Los Angeles Dodgers, it’s the last stop for those destined for the major leagues and sometimes gives Oklahomans the chance to see stars as they swing through on rehab stints. Residents have the park within walking distance, but also need to be aware of the traffic and hubbub that surrounds the stadium for home stands.
Non-stop events and activities keep the area busy all year round
There's more going on in Bricktown besides the games, though. The Criterion hosts national musical acts as well as comedians and more throughout the year. Nearby Scissortail Park hosts regular farmers markets, 5k walks, the spring block party, the Wind and Kite Festival, and concerts. Just west of Bricktown, Paycom Center – home of the Thunder – and the Oklahoma City Convention Center bring conventions, concerts, and so much more, with visitors regularly stopping in Bricktown before or after for entertainment.
Limited housing options and inventory
Bricktown features limited housing just by the nature of the neighborhood, with much of it being apartments. Home ownership is limited to modern condos and luxury townhomes, which makes Bricktown appeal to folks looking for a specific lifestyle. "A lot of people interested in Bricktown are looking to move from the suburbs and get back downtown where there are more things to do, and they can live a low-maintenance, urban lifestyle in a walkable area," Marcacci says. One-bedroom condos regularly sell in the range of $420,000 to $575,000, while larger two-bedroom condos generally sell for between $675,000 and $825,000. Much of it comes down to square footage and positioning in the building overall, as larger condos with better views go for more. Inventory is quite limited, with only three or four homes hitting the market annually.
Schools include free public charter options
Children living in Bricktown may attend Thelma R. Parks Elementary School for pre-kindergarten through fourth grade and move on to F.D. Moon Middle for fifth through eighth grade. Ninth through 12th graders attend Frederick Douglass High School, which has a highly regarded arts and music program. All three schools receive a C-minus from Niche. There is also the option to attend nearby John Rex Charter School, a free public charter school, for kindergarten through eighth grade – Rex receives an A grade from Niche. Students may also attend the local Catholic school system.
A canal runs through it
Bricktown River Walk Park, featuring the Bricktown Canal, offers walking trails and the Bricktown Water Taxi through green spaces, making it a popular evening walking spot for locals. Nearby, the Myriad Botanical Gardens is home to formal gardens as well as a Children’s Garden, while Scissortail Park features a lake, play pavilion, and dog park – it’s also a hub of events for the city.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
