Close community and old homes centered around park
Homes dating back nearly a century fill the tree-lined streets of Edgemere Park, one of seven Historic Preservation Districts in Oklahoma City. “A lot of people live here their whole lives,” says Peter Fulmer, a resident and Realtor at Parasol Real Estate. “Their parents live here, and their kids will move back here.” Fulmer only lives a few blocks from his mother and sister. Perhaps it is the generations of residents that help create a sense of community, or maybe it is the layout itself, where all sidewalks and streets lead to Edgemere Park, a tree-filled green space at the center of the neighborhood. But either way, Fulmer says this about his district, “The people are welcoming and interesting and quirky.”
Historic homes in park-centric neighborhood
Edgemere Park blends the natural environment and the area homes in a way that is hard to find elsewhere in the city. “While most neighborhoods are lined up in a grid, Edgemere Park has winding streets and rolling hills,” says Jennifer Kragh, a Realtor with Sage Sotheby’s International Realty. “That is one of the unique things about it. It doesn’t look like any other neighborhood in the area.” Brick bungalows neighbor Tudor and Colonial Revivals. A smattering of other architectural styles and accents, such as Mexican tile work, can be found. As a Historic Preservation District, Edgemere Park is subject to specific guidelines that preserve the integrity of the original neighborhood. “You can’t make alterations that would change what the house was originally,” Kragh says. “The purpose is to maintain the architecture as intended and how it deserves to be.” Prices for a home under 2,000 square feet range from $ 325,000 to $475,000, while most properties over 2,000 square feet can cost $475,000 to $575,000. There is a homeowners’ association. “It’s not compulsory, but most everyone is in it,” Fulmer says.
Risk of tornadoes in OKC
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Edgemere Park has a very high risk of tornadoes, given that Oklahoma City is part of Tornado Alley. Most standard homeowner’s insurance covers wind and storm damage. The city encourages residents to have a plan in place in case of a tornado and recommends sheltering inside their houses, avoiding vehicles and mobile homes.
Edgemere Park is community heart
Edgemere Park is a center for local events, including Oktoberfest and a Fourth of July celebration. “There will be music and games,” Fulmer says. “Somebody will roll a big cooker [grill] down – or two or three – and you’ll bring the sides, and someone else will bring the hamburgers.” Residents can use these gatherings to get to know their neighbors. There are several other smaller community parks, as well as Memorial Park, within 1 mile of Edgemere Park. At Memorial Park, walking trails pass a fountain, the Boys and Girls Club, soccer fields, and tennis and basketball courts. A handful of museums are nearby, including the Oklahoma History Center, which has indoor and outdoor exhibits, including one of the Red River Journey, a walking tour designed after the various terrains and flora of the Red River Journey.
Residents engage in city-wide events
While neighbors gather for events put on by their homeowners’ association, there are other events throughout the city in which residents participate. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon goes through Edgemere Park. When Fulmer lived closer to the park, he and his friends would set up “Mimosa Beach.” “We all got up at the crack of dawn and had a DJ on my porch,” he says. “We gave away either a little glass of champagne or a mimosa – we gave away thousands and thousands of them.” Fulmer is not the only resident who cheers on the runners. He says many of his neighbors and those in nearby communities would hand out food and drinks. Racers look forward to running through Gorilla Hill in Crown Heights, where crowds dress up in banana suits and hand out fruit. There are also several events in the Paseo Arts District, including monthly First Friday Gallery Walks and the annual Paseo Arts Festival, where attendees enjoy live music, food and displays from over 90 juried artists.
Paseo Arts District eateries and galleries
Edgemere Park is a short walk from the Paseo Arts District, a creative hub filled with restaurants, shops and galleries. Frida Southwest serves dishes inspired by Oklahoma, Sante Fe and northern Mexico, such as stacked enchiladas and Mexican Hot Chocolate Cheesecake. At Burger Punk, themed menu items range from the vegetarian Green Daze burger to thrash nachos. Fulmer recommends Flamingo Tiki. “It’s the best of its kind,” he says. “They have replicated drinks from the best tiki bars in the world.” There are boutiques and shops, including the Literari Press Comics & Novels and Eden, which sells unique clothes and accessories. There are countless galleries and spaces for creatives. Studio Six is a maker’s space that hosts monthly guest artists and lets visitors watch the artistic process during the First Friday Gallery Walks. Denise Duong is just one of the local artists with a gallery in the district, the Little D Gallery. “If you live in Oklahoma City or have driven around, you’ve probably seen some of her murals,” Fulmer says. Homeland is one of the closest grocery stores, although Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are nearby. Walmart, Target and Lowe’s are all within 5 miles of Edgemere Park.
Car-dependent community
While residents can walk from their homes to the Paseo Arts District, many still consider Edgemere Park a car-dependent neighborhood. Interstate 235 is to the east. Drivers can merge onto the interstate and access Interstate 44 to the north and Interstate 40 to the south. Some public transportation is nearby: Embark has an express route along I-235 and several bus stops within 1 mile. Will Rogers World Airport is about a 14-mile drive. St. Anthony Hospital is about 2 miles away.
Arts Integration elementary approach
Edgemere Park is served by Oklahoma City Public Schools. Wilson Elementary Arts Integration School earns a B-plus from Niche and offers pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. As part of the Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education program, students are encouraged to explore subjects creatively, hopefully achieving a better understanding of the arts and their core studies. Moon Middle School scores a C-minus, while Douglass High School receives a C. Trinity School at Edgemere is a private Christian school that students can attend from kindergarten through 12th grade.
