Once considered remote, the Edgewater Park neighborhood of Oklahoma City has blossomed into a vibrant community with abundant amenities. Local Realtor Ben Scott recalls a story about the former owner of a house that Scott sold during his decade of experience. “The seller’s kids told me that when he bought the house, all of his friends were asking why he wanted to live out here. But the city really grew up around the area in the years since,” he says. Much of that development is due to the proximity of the Northwest Expressway, allowing for easy access throughout the region. Edgewater Park is also tucked into the southwestern edge of Lake Hefner, which gives it an apt name and a location that’s tough to beat.

The great outdoors and hitting the links
Scott emphasizes that Lake Hefner is a big draw. “There’s a lot to do from a recreation standpoint,” he says. “There’s walking trails and bike trails, and even though the golf course is there, it’s only a two-minute drive to the lake.” This means residents can leave their homes and be sailing, fishing or just relaxing on a bench overlooking the water within a few minutes. The Bert Cooper Trail makes a 9-mile loop around the lake, perfect for walking, jogging or biking. Lake Hefner Golf Club is open to the public and features two 18-hole courses. The North Course covers nearly 7,000 yards, the South Course is a little more than 6,800. Both courses offer pin placements that will challenge experienced golfers, but the generous fairways keep it fun for beginners. On-site instructors are available for lessons, or golfers can practice on the driving range. The Lake Hefner Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for pre- or post-round sustenance. Children can frolic at the nearby Stars and Stripes Park, while skaters can grind rails and land kickflips at the adjacent skate park. Aviation enthusiasts can take to the air, in a manner of speaking, at Tom Jones R/C Flying Field, where multiple runways allow radio-controlled aircraft to take off and land no matter the wind direction.
Homes on Lake Hefner
The majority of homes in Edgewater Park are classic brick ranch-styles, built in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Prospective buyers need to know that the market here is tight, and they should prepare to act quickly when something comes on the market. “There aren’t usually many listings here, and there’s not a high rate of turnover,” says Realtor Jacqueline Smith. “When houses do come up for sale, they’re usually snapped up quickly. Homes in the neighborhood haven’t changed hands as much as homes in other nearby neighborhoods.” The median price of homes is $275,000, and buyers can expect to pay an average of $127 per square foot. A four-bedroom/three-bathroom ranch-style home can sell for around $252,000, and prices can go up to $345,000 for a four-bedroom/three-bath ranch-style with an in-ground pool.
From antiques to Asian cuisine
For some retail therapy, Edgewater Park residents can head to the shops along Northwest Expressway. At 3 Strands Antique Mall, shoppers find antique and vintage items from a variety of sellers occupying the 35,000-square-foot space. Nearby Lakeshore Shopping Center includes an Academy Sports & Outdoors, Dollar Tree and Total Nutrition, as well as a Planet Fitness. For grocery shopping and other necessities, Walmart Neighborhood Market sits about 1.5 miles south of the neighborhood. When opting to dine out, residents of Edgewater Park can choose between fast-food chains and slightly more elevated sit-down restaurants. Fans of do-it-yourself cooking can feast on Asian cuisine at Lemongrass Hot Pot, where diners cook their own meals by dipping pieces of meat and vegetables into a bowl of hot broth. Alternatively, diners at 5-Star Sushi can watch their meal being prepared by a master craftsman working just across the bar from them.
Back to school in Putnam City district
Edgewater Park is served by the Putnam City Public Schools district, which earns an overall rating of B-minus from Niche. Students can attend Rollingwood Elementary, Hefner Middle and Putnam City North High. Rollingwood earns a C-plus from Niche, Hefner garners a B-minus and Putnam City North gets a B. In addition to a rigorous academic program, students at Putnam City North High School can participate in 22 different school-sponsored clubs or 22 varsity sports. Alternatively, there are several area private schools. Niche rates Casady School as the best private school in Oklahoma City and gives it an A-plus grade.
Getting around Oklahoma City
Edgewater Park sits approximately 13 miles from downtown Oklahoma City, and Interstate 44 is less than 4 miles away. Will Rogers World Airport is 14 miles south. There are no bus stops in the neighborhood, so Edgewater Park is quite car-dependent.
Community and camaraderie
While real estate might be all about location, friendly neighbors are also an important consideration. “Edgewater Park is a very friendly community,” says Smith. “The whole neighborhood has a friendly atmosphere.” That friendliness – paired with the neighborhood’s location – could help explain why so many of Edgewater Park’s residents choose to stick around.
