Opulence meets convenience
At the start of the 1990s, Gaillardia was sprawling farmland and open prairie. By the end of the decade, it had become the luxurious European-inspired gated community it is today. “The Gaylord family initially developed the neighborhood as a reflection of French Normandy architecture,” says Alice Dahlgren, a recently retired Realtor who has lived in Gaillardia for over 20 years. Dahlgren notes that the area's opulent atmosphere and convenient location are two of its biggest draws. “It’s definitely one of the upper-end, more affluent neighborhoods in the northwestern part of Oklahoma City,” Dahlgren says.
More than golf at Gaillardia Country Club
At the neighborhood’s center, Gaillardia Country Club’s 18-hole golf course encompasses nearly half of the community’s acreage, designed to blend with the natural landscape. “If it weren’t for the fence around the course, you’d think it was just an extension of the greenways,” says Dahlgren. But there’s more to the club than golf. “Membership also includes the fitness center, pickleball and tennis courts and the pool and pool house facilities,” Dahlgren says. “Pickleball especially is becoming super popular, so that’s a draw. I’d say most people who live here are members of the club; it’s one of the reasons people move here and stay here.” Nearby, the 140-acre Martin Park Nature Center features 2.5 miles of woodland trails, guided hikes and a nature center.
Fourth of July fireworks
Gaillardia Country Club hosts endless events for members, including murder mystery dinners, monthly wine tastings and so many events for the kids that they have a full-time youth coordinator. Every Fourth of July, it opens up to non-members for a party that Assistant General Manager Abby Berry says draws between 1,200 and 1,500 people. There's an all-day party at the pool, then locals head to the lawn for food, balloon animals, face painting, a DJ and fireworks. “It’s a massive fireworks show set to music,” Berry says. “We have one of the biggest fireworks shows in town, you can see it from the entire neighborhood.”
Date night at Charleston’s
Residents often pick up groceries at Sprouts Farmers Market just 2 miles from home. Quail Springs Mall and Chisholm Creek, two of the city’s most popular retail, dining and entertainment destinations, are both less than 7 miles down John Kilpatrick Turnpike. Gaillardia foodies don’t need to hop on the main road for great restaurant options, though. “There are a few sushi restaurants nearby, as well as Charleston’s, Bricktown Brewery and Earl’s all off of Memorial Road,” Dahlgren says, recommending Charleston’s for everything from date night to a family night out. “Anything on the menu is great, and they have a neat sports bar.”
Custom homes with room to breathe
At the time Dahlgren and her family moved to Gaillardia, many homes were still being built. “We were able to build fresh, and really do what we wanted,” Dahlgren says, explaining that most homes in the neighborhood are custom builds. This customizability means that while French Normandy architecture still reigns supreme in the neighborhood, other styles like Traditional, Tudor and Mediterranean make appearances. Some new constructions are still popping up throughout Gaillardia, but Dahlgren notes that “it’s almost all built out now.” Homes here aren’t closely spaced like in typical suburban neighborhoods, though. “There are four different lot sizes for homes here, ranging from a quarter acre or a little less to 2 or even 3 acres,” Dahlgren says. “The amount of land on each property keeps you from feeling like you’re on top of your neighbors, and there’s plenty of reserved acreage that’s maintained by the homeowner’s association as common areas as well.”
Lot and home values in Gaillardia increase with size. “You can expect to pay around $250,000 or $300,000 for a quarter-acre lot, but current resale values for homes are between about $700,000 and $4 million or $5 million,” Dahlgren says. The median price for a home here is just over $1.5 million, which is more than $1 million over the median for the greater OKC metro area.
