Buzzing district just minutes from Downtown OKC

Oklahoma City’s Midtown district is one that wears many hats as a go-to spot for locals to dine, shop and have a night out on the town. Midtown is buzzing with life thanks to the myriad dining, retail and entertainment choices filling many of the area’s once vacant, but now restored historic buildings. “People can live here, work here, eat here, everything,” says Cindy Biddinger, a Realtor with First Source Real Estate and Oklahoma City native who has sold homes in the area since 1994. “There’s a lot of activities going on, and it’s just a fun place to be.” This walkable neighborhood is located just minutes from downtown and is notably home to SSM Health St. Anthony’s Hospital, a 773-bed hospital established in 1898.

Plaza Court and beloved local eateries

The grand Plaza Court building that stands in the heart of Midtown is a prime example of the rejuvenation taking place in the neighborhood over the past couple of decades. Built in 1927 as the city’s first suburban shopping center, Plaza Court eventually fell into decline and sat vacant for 13 years until a developer brought it back to life with an extensive renovation in 2006. Today, Plaza Court is a hive of activity with stores, restaurants, offices and the popular watering hole, James E. McNellie’s Public House, where locals can enjoy a meal and a pint on the patio beneath the iconic rooftop Midtown Plaza Court sign. Residents can dine outdoors at The Collective Kitchens & Cocktails. As OKC’s first food hall, locals gather here to enjoy cuisine from around the world, ranging from tamales to poke bowls. Nearby, Commonplace Books has all of the new bestsellers in its wide selection of books, and is also home to poetry readings, events and story time for kids. Lunar Lounge is a hidden gem for a night out, offering craft cocktails and a chill vibe.

Shop local vendors

Residents can groove to live music and check out local vendors at the annual Midtown Walk About, where merchants provide specials, discounts, and activities for customers. Locals head to Midtown on the fourth Saturday of the month to shop from local businesses at the Make Ready Market, which has vendors selling everything from ceramics to jewelry and baked goods.

Trolleys and public transportation

“Everybody walks or hops on a scooter or a trolley,” says Biddinger. Many residents in Midtown can get to their favorite restaurant by walking, but there are several options to get around the OKC metro area easily. “We have trolleys that go all around the downtown area, as well as the bus system, but the trolleys are really convenient,” Biddinger says.

High-end modern homes and rental options

Home styles vary in Midtown from turn-of-the-century Territorial Victorian single-family homes to contemporary, newly constructed townhouses. The Cottage District, also known as SoSA, which is short for South of St. Anthony’s, is a sought-after pocket of Midtown with high-end, modern homes. House prices range from $700,000 to over $1 million. “A unique feature of the Midtown area would be walkability to retail and restaurants from modern homes, historic homes and high-end apartments,” says Jenna Harper, Broker Associate with Sage Sotheby’s International Realty.

Neighborhood greenspaces

Greenspaces throughout Midtown are within walking distance for most residents. Parents can take their children to Red Andrews Park for an afternoon of play. The park also has a loop trail for joggers. Dog owners take their pups to make new friends at Midtown Mutts Dog Park.

Oklahoma City Public Schools

Students in the Midtown area will head to class at Thelma R. Parks Elementary School, followed by F.D. Moon Middle School, home of the Cardinals. Douglass High School offers an Academy of Law and Public Safety program that allows students to get first-hand experience in the field of their choice and includes career-specific classes and work studies. All schools received C-minus grades on Niche.
