South Oklahoma City neighborhood outside Will Rogers Airport

Planes flying in for a landing at Will Rogers World Airport pass over the southside Oklahoma City neighborhood of Rockwood, sitting less than three miles north of the runways. It’s common here for people to pause and look up for a glimpse. “It’s pretty cool. You can’t hear the planes, but you can see them in the sky,” says Eric Avalos, a Realtor with Metro First Realty who has lived in OKC all his life. He notes that a branch of the Oklahoma River flows through the neighborhood’s western side, with trees lining the banks, creating a more secluded feel. Interstate 44 courses through the east, a big draw for working residents. “There’s a lot of employment around there with Amazon and Hobby Lobby. So, it’s a short commute to big employers,” Avalos says. Once a commuter enclave for meat packing plant workers, the neighborhood is about two miles from Stockyards City, where residents today can enjoy its western-themed shops and restaurants.

At the eastern edge of Rockwood, is the Will Rogers Expressway (I-44) and South May Ave.

Cottages and ranch-style homes with converted garages

Homes here sit in snug rows on small lots dwarfed by mature trees. Added carports sometimes shade concrete driveways. Yards, uniquely adorned with personal decorations, are minimally landscaped. Buyers will find 1940s and 1950s cottages with minimal traditional, midcentury or Craftsman-inspired details and 1960s ranch-style designs that often feature converted garages for more living space. Properties under 900 square feet that will require renovation can list for under $100,000, while newly upgraded builds with modern kitchens and bathrooms can start at $125,000 and reach close to $150,000.

Easy access to Interstate 44 and the South Grand Trail

Commuters in this neighborhood have easy access to Interstate 44. Downtown OKC is about 4 miles away, and Will Rogers Airport is a 4-mile drive. Without sidewalks, residents can walk along the residential streets to bus stops on the busier South Grand Boulevard, Southwest 17th and 29th streets. Pedaling down the 11-mile South Grand Trail leads cyclists to destinations across this side of the city or connects them to the Oklahoma River Trail for a ride with views of the water.

Western-themed retail and dining at Stockyards City

For everyday shopping, residents can visit Economy Square, a strip mall anchored by La Michoacana Supermarket, next to several national and regional fast-food chains. Authentic Latin American restaurants are nearby, clustered at the corner of 29th and Newcastle. For decades, locals have stepped up to the counter to order tacos and burritos at Tacoville. And residents rave about the Salvadorean flavors and kindness served up at El Majahual. A perk of the neighborhood is being close to Stockyards City, where an afternoon can be spent browsing western wares before ending the day with a meal at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, the oldest continually operating restaurant in the city and one of the most popular eateries in OKC.

A neighborhood park and a sports complex

At the heart of the neighborhood lies Lorraine Thomas Park, where residents can take laps around the open green space on a concrete trail while children romp around the playground. A short drive south leads to the Woodson Park Athletic Complex to access a handful of soccer and baseball fields, a disc golf course, a swimming pool and a center for seniors. For those who love to be out on the water or want to bike along the riverbank, a boat ramp and access to the Oklahoma River Trail is less than a mile away at the corner of 15th and Portland.
