A residential enclave surrounded by industrial sites
Located just 5 miles from downtown Oklahoma City and outdoor riverside recreation, Shallow Brook is primarily an industrial area, with a few residential pockets scattered in between. "Shallow Brook provides a good opportunity for first-time buyers to get into a home and start creating wealth," says Glen Cosper, Realtor with Keller Williams-Green Meadow who has over 26 years of experience and was named the 2020 South Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. "Its proximity to the highway is beneficial, too." With companies like Tyler Sheet Metal Inc. and Quik Service Steel Co. nearby for job opportunities and access to major roadways like Interstate 35, Shallow Brook residents enjoy easy commutes to both downtown and surrounding communities.
Ranch-style homes on modest lots
Properties in Shallow Brook consist of single-story ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and early 1970s. "The neighborhood is a product of the Baby Boomer expansion of the 1960s," Cosper says. "But a few newer houses were built on vacant lots about 10 to 12 years ago." Many homes display brick facades with attached garages and driveways, while others boast carports. Prices in the neighborhood typically range from the $100,000s for a three-bedroom, one-bath home that could use some updating to the $170,000s for a recently remodeled three-bedroom, two-bath home.
C-rated schools in Shallow Brook
The Oklahoma City Public Schools District serves the community, scoring average ratings on Niche. Young students start their education at C-minus-rated schools like Bodine Elementary, Webster Middle School and Capitol Hill High. Capitol Hill High offers two specialty academic programs, the Academy of Arts and the Academy of Engineering, which provide students with internships, field experience, and other specialized learning opportunities. Private school options are nearby, such as the B-rated Destiny Christian School 3 miles away that serves prekindergarten through 12th grade students.
Afternoons at Shallow Brook and Trosper Park
Shallow Brook Park is tucked away in the heart of the neighborhood. The park offers a quiet green space for a playground playdate or a jog along the walking path. For folks who prefer to walk the back nine on a sunny afternoon, there's the public 18-hole Trosper Golf Course less than 3 miles north of Shallow Brook. “The golf course is quite popular. Their membership rates have grown over 35% post COVID,” Cosper says. Trosper Park not only boasts a golf course, but also features amenities like walking trails, a playground and disc golf course.
Restaurants and bars along SE 44th Street
Nearby restaurants include the popular Coneys & More for classic chili dogs and small Mexican eateries clustered along Southeast 44th Street. For a drink after work, Jim's Sunset Bar & Grill is a local dive with pool tables, while K Saloon is the go-to spot for drinks on the patio and occasional live music. Regarding grocery shopping, check out the family-owned Wheeler's Meat Market, an old-school butcher shop that's been in business for over 100 years. Other major retailers include Dollar General and a Walmart Supercenter about 3 miles away. For more upscale dining or afternoons at the movie theater, locals can head to Bricktown or south to Moore City, home to major retailers like Costco Wholesale and Target.
Live music at Diamond Ballroom
About three miles south of Shallow Brook, locals can jam the night away at Diamond Ballroom, a live-music venue that has hosted national recording artists since 1964. Locals can also always hop on Interstate 35 for a 5 mile drive to the Blazers Ice Centre. Here, one can spin around the rink, join a hockey league, or catch an Oklahoma City Blazers or University of Oklahoma hockey game.
Commutes on Interstate 35
Interstate 35 borders Shallow Brook to the west, while Interstate 240 sits south for commuting around town. Those looking to travel even further can catch a flight at Will Rogers World Airport, about 11 miles away. Locals are also near essential amenities, with hospitals like Norman Regional Moore and Community Hospital less than 10 miles away. “More than 15 churches are within 15 miles,” Cosper says, while the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses also calls Shallow Brook home.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
