Northwest Oklahoma City neighborhood "surrounded by green"
Val Verde translates to “green valley,” a fitting name for the neighborhood near Lake Hefner in the booming northwest portion of Oklahoma City. Val Verde has access to popular green spaces like Martin Park, not to mention its own vibrant, well-landscaped yards. “Val Verde is a nice, quiet neighborhood surrounded by green but with easy access to the rest of the city,” says Thomas Bernstein, a broker associate with KirkAngel. “It’s definitely one of the more affluent neighborhoods in the area.”
Val Verde has several beautiful gated communities for residents to enjoy.
The Lake Hefner lighthouse offers Val Verde residents stunning sunset views nearby.

Martin Park Nature Center's environmental education
The Martin Park Nature Center encompasses nearly 150 acres in the neighborhood’s northeastern corner, offering paths among the grasslands and rocky streams. “It’s not the place to go play football or soccer,” Bernstein says. “It’s more of a nature park than a sports park, with the walking trails, a lot of tree coverage and big, beautiful ponds with fish and wildlife.” The park’s 500,000-plus annual visitors can learn more about the local flora and fauna at the park’s learning library, which features live animals and various hands-on learning experiences. Less than 2 miles south of Val Verde, Bluff Creek Park is right across the street from Lake Hefner. It offers picnic pavilions and a playground as well as access to trails, including the Bert Cooper Trail that circles Lake Hefner.
Bluff Creek Park provides an excellent space for kids to learn and connect with nature.
At Martin Park Nature Center, you can spot adorable American Robins.

Custom modern homes throughout Val Verde
Interior residential streets meander around small streams and often end in cul-de-sacs. Homes are mainly 1980s-era traditional-style homes in Val Verde, and many feature singular architectural details. “There are all different types of homes here. It’s a custom neighborhood,” Bernstein says. “Most are traditional or modern transitional, but there’s even a few straight modern homes. But most of the houses are custom. They’re not just based on plans, so it’s got a lot of charm.” Smaller one-story brick and stone homes generally sell between the low-$300,000s and mid-$400,000s, while more unique modern homes go from the upper $500,000s to the mid-$700,000s. Larger estates are scattered throughout the neighborhood and sell between $1 million and $1.3 million.

Three different school districts, including Deer Creek
Val Verde is split between three separate school districts. The southeast portion of the neighborhood is included in Oklahoma City Public Schools and sends kids to Quail Creek Elementary, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche. Students then attend C-minus-rated John Marshall Middle and C-plus-rated John Marshall High. The southwest section is part of Putnam City Schools, with students starting at A-minus-rated Dennis Elementary before heading to B-graded Hefner Middle and Putnam City North High, given a B-plus. The remainder of Val Verde is part of the highly regarded Deer Creek Schools district. Deer Creek Elementary receives an A and serves kindergarten through third grade, before students head to the A-minus-rated Deer Creek 4th & 5th Grade Center. Deer Creek Intermediate hosts sixth graders, while Deer Creek Middle has seventh and eighth grade, each receiving an A. Deer Creek High is rated A-minus and the 13th-best school for athletes in the state, according to Niche.
The Deer Creek 4th and 5th Grade Center has a very modern design.
A popular option for schooling after middle school is Deer Creek High School.

Local chains along Kilpatrick Turnpike
Banks, fast-food options and local chain restaurants sit along Kilpatrick Turnpike at the northern edge of Val Verde. Charleston’s is an Oklahoma City staple that offers traditional American fare in a warm sit-down setting, while Bricktown Brewery has local craft brews and pub fare in its more industrial interior. Farther east down the turnpike, Quail Springs Mall has the typical retailers like American Eagle and H&M, plus a movie theater, while Chisholm Creek offers food offerings and family entertainment, including Topgolf, around a small lake. Residents don’t have to go far for groceries, though, as a Sprouts Farmers Market is located across the street from the neighborhood within walking distance.

HOA events in Val Verde
HOAs cover much of Val Verde, including its namesake HOA, the largest of the bunch. The Val Verde HOA puts on events such as food truck visits and block parties for residents. Plenty of neighborhood events are put on at the Martin Park Nature Center, such as educational programs and group recreation opportunities. The nearby Northwest Library also offers programs, from book clubs to holiday celebrations.
15 miles to downtown OKC
Kilpatrick Turnpike runs along the northern extent of Val Verde and acts as a beltway around the northwest side of Oklahoma City. And a mile east is Lake Hefner Parkway, which takes residents most of the 15 miles south toward downtown. Locals mainly drive to get around, but Oklahoma City’s EMBARK transit system does offer bus service, with one line stopping adjacent to the neighborhood. Will Rogers World Airport sits 16 miles south of Val Verde and offers direct flights to over 20 destinations nationwide.
