Growing South OKC community with new homes small town character
In the late 1800s, the city of Moore began as a tiny railroad outpost with only a handful of stores and an economy primarily built on agriculture. Moore’s population remained small and rural for most of the 20th century, but since 2000 has been steadily growing, increasing from 41,000 to more than 62,000 in the 2020 census. Fourteen miles south of downtown Oklahoma City, the Westmoore neighborhood straddles the line between OKC’s rapidly expanding southern corridor and Moore’s small-town character, both geographically and culturally. Historically, south Oklahoma City had a blue collar identity, and with rapid development changing the demographics, Westmoore has maintained this character. “The southside still thinks of itself as blue collar. Westmoore is not any different. They are good salt of the earth people, it’s a great community. Anything with Moore in the name, people look out for each other,” explains Jim Miller, a Realtor with Keller Williams-Yukon. As part of Oklahoma City, Westmoore draws on activities in Moore and OKC to provide its residents with a strong social life, while preserving its own identity. “Westmoore is meant to be a very distinguished area with a lot of high-end homes,” says Realtor Kerri Helm with Providence Realty and OKC resident.
Higher end new construction homes
Most homes in Westmoore tend to be elegant two-story Craftsman properties with brick or stone facades. Two- to three-car garages keep parking off the streets for a more open and connected feel. Some neighborhoods sport classic single-story midcentury modern homes with dramatic roofing designs so that each house on the block stands out in its own way. Brick masonry mailboxes mark each home. Houses in Westmoore often have sizeable lots for lawns and landscaping. “If you’re in a neighborhood, lots typically start at a quarter acre,” Helm says. “In a more rural area, you can get anywhere from an acre to unlimited acreage.” Homes in Westmoore are typically $250,000 to $500,000 for a four bedroom property with larger drawing higher price tags.

Continuous retail growth presents opportunities for the housing sector
Westmoore has numerous shopping options right within the neighborhood and is close the growing I-35 corridor that connects OKC and Norman that has seen an influx of retail development, supporting the growing housing sector. “There used to be country between Oklahoma City and Norman, and Oklahoma City and Moore, and now it's just continuous,” Miller says. In Greenbriar Square Shopping Center, Sprouts Farmers Market has natural and organic options. At the corner of SW 134th Street and Santa Fe Avenue, a Walmart Neighborhood Market has familiar brands and products. Okie Tonk Café highlights the area’s strong state identity with an Oklahoma-themed sports bar. Residents can also find plenty of regional brands, like Oklahoma’s own Braum’s Ice Cream for locally-sourced dairy products and Old School Bagel Café for unique cream cheese flavors, like Nutella and cinnamon walnut. “You've had a lot of things going there in the last 20 years. You've had a Home Depot and Chick fil-A and multiple Starbucks and every fast food restaurant you can imagine. And there's still there's still growth going on along there in terms of retail and restaurants that are going in there. And then you've got more and more housing,” Miller adds.

High performing Moore Schools
Some students begin at Eastlake Elementary School, moving onto Brink Junior High School and Westmoore High School. All three schools are rated an A-minus or better on Niche. Juniors and seniors at Westmoore High School can opt into classes offered at the Moore-Norman Technology Center to work toward developing vocational skills and certifications. It also offers various Advanced Placement courses for students to earn potential college credit. Opening in 1989 Westmoore High’s reach extends west of I-44 deep into OKC’s south side. Miller notes the strength of the district has supported the overall economic growth of south OKC.
Brink Junior High School is located at 11420 South Western Avenue in Moore, Oklahoma.

Unique playground themes at Moore parks
At Moore’s Central Park, visitors can enjoy the pavilion and amphitheater with the green lawn. The Station is the community’s recreational center, which includes an indoor track, cycling studio and childcare services. Little River Park is 52 acres, for increased access to the Oklahoma outdoors with walking trails and outdoor exercise equipment throughout. At the two ponds, individuals with state licenses can fish. Each park in the greater Moore area has a different themed playground, bringing variety to kids’ playtime. The Central Park playground is train themed, while the one at Little River Park is pirate. Earlywine Golf Course sits of the western end of the neighborhood and is one of the city’s premier courses. “It’s a really well kept course. They’ve got a really nice driving range. Oklahoma golf courses are really kept in good shape and Earlywine is a major draw for that area,” Miller says.
A car-dependent community close to several interstates
Residents are 14 miles south of downtown Oklahoma City and have access to several major highways including I-35, I-44 and I-240. Will Rogers Airport is 12 miles west with service to several regional destinations like Chicago, Houston, Denver and Vegas through several major airlines.
Festivals and community events in Old Town of Moore
The Old Town of Moore hosts many events in the historic city center. From light parades and tree lightings in the winter to festivals with car shows and food trucks in the summer, Westmoore residents can come together with the greater Moore community for annual favorites. The Red Ribbon Parade encourages groups to decorate vehicles to promote a drug-free environment. “At the Fourth of July, all the fireworks shoot off from Buck Thomas Park,” says Helm. In the winter, Westmoore can join the rest of OKC in celebrating the winter holidays at the Downtown in December festival. Ten blocks of downtown OKC transform, offering the Devon Ice Rink for outdoor skating, man-made tubing courses and horse-drawn carriages. Throughout the year residents will often go into the OKC for concerts and basketball games.
Tornado Alley
In recent years, Moore has been struck by three major tornadoes: 1999, 2003 and 2013. It is considered to be a part of tornado alley. Residents should take precautions and familiarize themselves with emergency safety plans.
