It might be tucked away behind commercial lots and the Northwest Expressway retail corridor, but Oklahoma City's Wilshire Ridge neighborhood is no secret. Located about 13 miles from downtown, this quiet enclave rests in the middle ground between Lake Hefner and Lake Overholser and offers a blend of natural and retail amenities. "It's a pretty established neighborhood," says Charlotte Wylie, a broker associate with Whittington Realty who lived in Wilshire Ridge for 14 years. "I loved my neighbors, and there's also a voluntary homeowners association. I liked that I had shopping in my backyard and it's also conveniently near the expressway."
Spend the day at Lake Hefner
Walkers and bicyclists alike head to Lake Hefner to exercise along the trails that circle the picturesque lake. Kayaking and paddle boarding are also popular waterside activities for visitors, and fishers try their hand at getting their catch of the day on the docks. Residents can spend their day on the greens at Lake Hefner Golf Club, home to two courses with water hazards and bunkers. After a round of golf, players can head to Lake Hefner Cafe for some fairway favorite foods. If Lake Hefner is crowded, Overholser Park is just 6 miles away and is also a popular kayaking spot.
Traditional and affordable homes
"It's a great neighborhood for people just starting out and buying their first home and for empty nesters," Wylie says. Traditional brick single-family homes built in the 1980s are the primary housing option throughout Wilshire Ridge. Houses tend to have three to four bedrooms and can be anywhere between 1,100 to 2,000 square feet. Since Wilshire Ridge is a small neighborhood so can be limited housing options at times, but on average homes tend to sell between $175,000 and $250,000.
Nearby Putnam City Schools
Students in Wilshire Ridge might head to class at Tulakes Elementary School, part of the Putnam City Schools district, which has a C grade from Niche. Depending on where they live, some students will start at B-rated Northridge Elementary. Kenneth Cooper Middle School has a C-plus grade and offers programs ranging from drama and theater to the Science Olympiad, where students can compete against other schools in various STEM challenges and workshops. Students will then round out their education at Putnam City High School, which received a C-minus Niche rating.
Retail shopping and eateries close by
Retail shopping is just minutes away for Wilshire Ridge residents, with both the Silver Springs Pointe shopping center and Rockwell Plaza shopping center close by. There's also a bounty of fill-your-belly restaurant options close to home, like Jo-Bawbs BBQ. At Jo-Bawbs, hungry customers line up for championship brisket, ribs, pulled pork and more. But get there early because Jo-Bawbs sells out fast, and no more burnt ends means it's closing time. Not to worry, though. Residents can always hop over to Northwest Expressway, where there's a multitude of restaurant options, including family-owned Cajun Corner. For those who prefer to cook at home, the Walmart Supercenter and Aldi are ideally located for an easy, last-minute grocery store run.
Easy commuting around OKC
Residents can take the Northwest Expressway to start their commute or head to downtown OKC, set just 13 miles away. Embark bus stops are available along Council Road as well as the expressway.
