Fields betwixt Winds West and industrial Oklahoma
Winds West perches on the southwestern outskirts of Oklahoma City, nearly 14 miles from downtown. Industrial parks and distribution facilities for well-known American brands like Hobby Lobby and Sherwin-Williams surround the community’s quiet residential streets, with wide, sunny fields acting as a buffer between them. “One of the nice things about Oklahoma City is that we have a lot of land,” says Verity Real Estate’s Jenna Laird, a local realtor with nearly two decades of experience, adding that as space becomes increasingly scarce downtown, developers are turning their attention to this part of the city. “Most of these homes are early-2000s construction, but the area around here is growing fast,” Laird says. “It’s a desirable area for people who want a little more space than in those urban core neighborhoods, without being totally disconnected from the city. Plus, the home prices here tend to be more reasonable, too.”
Craftsmans galore in the neighborhood
The Craftsman-inspired early-2000s homes throughout Winds West are closely spaced along the neatly arranged residential streets. Little decorative maple trees dot the well-maintained, simply-landscaped front lawns. Prices here range between $200,000 and $275,000, slightly under the median for the wider metro area. “It’s hard to say what prices will do in the future as new construction keeps cropping up around here. But these homes are likely to hold their value, especially as OKC spreads farther in this direction,” says Laird.

Dual school districts
Winds West students are served by schools in either the Western Heights or Mustang Public Schools systems, so parents are advised to double-check the boundary lines ahead of registration. Youngsters in the Mustang district go to Prairie View Elementary, Mustang North Middle and Mustang High School. The three schools were highly rated by Niche in 2023; Prairie View earned an A-minus and both the middle and high schools earned B-pluses. At Mustang High, teens can participate in the Aviation program, designed to prepare graduates for careers in aviation, aerospace and aeronautics. Western Heights students go to Winds West Elementary, Western Heights Middle and Western Heights High School. These three schools received slightly lower grades from Niche in 2023. Winds West Elementary and Western Heights Middle earned C-minuses and the high school earned a C-plus.

Local breweries and retail chains nearby
The closest Crest Foods is just under 10 miles away, about a 15-minute drive up the Kilpatrick Turnpike, but there’s Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s locations closer to home off Highway 152 less than five miles south. Coop Ale Works, a local OKC craft brewery, is even closer, less than a mile south across 44th Street. Visit on Saturdays for a tour of the brewery and stay for happy hour at the taproom to taste one of their classic core lineup of IPAs and pilsners, or a funky brewery-only release like their Cucumber Saturday Siren.
