Established more than 50 years ago next to Wiley Post Airport, Woodlake is a northwestern Oklahoma City suburb with a prime position near schools, shopping centers and restaurants. While it doesn’t offer commercial flights, the private airport is steadily used by pilots with personal aircraft and, more recently, high schoolers in the Putnam City Schools aviation program. “Probably the best thing about this neighborhood is its location near the Northwest Expressway,” says Becky Ivins, a broker with Movers Real Estate. “Woodlake is just the definition of convenient. There’s no other neighborhood quite like it in the city, from which you could either drive or fly where you need to go, with either option being easy.”

Contemporary and ranch-style homes from the 1970s
Homes in Woodlake were built in the 1970s and tend to feature the hallmarks of Oklahoman suburbs, including attached, front-facing garages, an earthy color palette, and natural brick or stone facades. Contemporary-style homes are common, as are single-story and raised ranch-style homes. Inside, most homes have wood floors, brick fireplaces and built-in bookshelves or storage. “The sidewalks are a unique feature since most older neighborhoods around here don’t have them, and it’s really a sign of a well-loved community that there aren’t weeds and runners growing over them,” Ivins says. Prices range from $180,000 to $300,000, increasing in price with additional space and renovations like a remodeled kitchen. However, it's rare for homes here to come on the market, and only four homes sold from August 2023 to August 2024.

Putnam City Schools District unveils new aviation program facility
Kids can walk to Tulakes Elementary School, about a quarter mile from most homes. The elementary school receives a C from Niche. Capps Middle School, a mile away, receives a B-minus, as does Putnam City High School. In August 2024, the Putnam City Schools District opened a one-of-a-kind aviation program facility at the regional Wiley Post Airport. The facility will be a hub for hands-on learning in aviation technology, maintenance and operations. School officials also take pride in prepping kids for college: More than $3 million in scholarships were awarded to the 2023 class.

Thirteen miles to downtown OKC
The Northwest Expressway is a major roadway that connects to the Kilpatrick Turnpike and Lake Hefner Parkway, which turns into I-44. Route 66 is a straight shot south down Rockwell Avenue. Most people opt to drive, but there are also several Embark bus stops on Lyrewood Lane. Medical care is 4 miles away at INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center. Downtown Oklahoma City is 13 miles away on I-235, and Will Rogers World Airport is 14 miles away via I-44. Although the neighborhood is next to Wiley Post Airport, general aviation manager Christy Slater says the airport rarely gets complaints about noise. The city-owned private-use airport, named for the first pilot to fly solo around the world, is popular among flight enthusiasts and houses 300 aircraft in its leased hangars. One hangar on Millionaire Drive has been transformed into the Oklahoma Museum of Flying, which has aeronautical artifacts and two retired U.S. bombers: Miss America, a P-51 Mustang, and Super Rabbit, a B-25 Mitchell.

Close to Warr Acres Library, Lake Hefner
The Warr Acres branch of the Metropolitan Library is a mile outside the neighborhood. Beyond its book collection, the library hosts enrichment activities for kids, community classes, workshops and events. Dolese Park features a disc golf course, a playground, baseball fields and paved walking trails that wind around a pond favorited by ducks. During the summer, lake rats head to Lake Hefner about 3 miles northeast for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Stars and Stripes Park on the lake has a playground, walking trails and a skatepark. Golfers can also hit the links at Lake Hefner Golf Club. Bird watchers, wildlife spotters and nature photographers enjoy Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge for its trails and access to the Canadian River, which is frequented by kayakers and fishermen.

Woodlake’s proximity to the Northwest Expressway puts residents near a plethora of fast-casual restaurants and big-box stores. The plaza is also home to casual sit-down chain restaurants like Louie’s Grill & Bar, Chili’s and Schlotzsky's. Award-winning barbecue is about a mile away at Joe-Bawb’s BBQ, which serves up brisket, burnt ends, ribs and other smoky delicacies out of a food trailer — while supplies last.
