About Okmulgee, OK

About Okmulgee, OK

Blend of urban and rural amenities

Situated 35 miles south of Tulsa, Okmulgee offers a unique blend of urban and rural pleasures, with rodeos adding a touch of excitement to the mix. A genuine camaraderie permeates the air here — a willingness to look out for each other, a tradition of smiling at strangers, and a collective effort to preserve the warmth of a friendly, small-town ambiance. Annual events in Okmulgee’s downtown area help bring the community together. “Something is going on just about every month of the year,” says Court Newkirk, the executive director of Okmulgee Area Development Corp. “The biggest and most well-known event is probably the Harvest Spoon Chili Festival in the fall, which recently combined with the annual Pecan Festival.”

Local flavors on 6th Street

Okmulgee residents enjoy quick access to the many restaurants and retail stores on 6th Street and Wood Drive. Juicy patties and hand-cut onion rings have made Coleman’s All Beef Burgers a local favorite since the 1950s. A life-sized statue of a bucking bull welcomes visitors to The Rodeo, a go-to restaurant for Tex-Mex food. Groceries and everyday goods can be purchased at the Walmart Super Center on the city's south side. A collection of antique stores and thrift shops are found east of Wood Drive, along with a Sharpe’s department store.

Places with almost 6,000 square feet of living space. They need some work, but you can get outstanding value,” says Newkirk.
