Holiday Hills residents enjoy the perks of living in a planned community with direct access to the fresh waters of Ward Lake—a feature few neighborhoods can boast. Located in the southern portion of Olympia, Holiday Hills offers a prime location just south of downtown and east of Tumwater Hill. The community lends a suburban feel while being a short distance from two vibrant locales. “This area is great because you can wander in and out of Olympia, Tumwater and Lacey,” says Jessica Strauss Tomy, area resident and Program Aide with the City of Olympia Parks and Recreation. “They are all intertwined. Sometimes it’s hard to determine which is which, but it doesn’t seem overwhelmingly big. We all feel connected, and because of this, it’s pretty easy to get everywhere.”

Roomy streets and mid-century homes
As commonly seen in other parts of the city, the streets are filled with shrubs, towering trees and flowering plants, providing bursts of color when navigating the area. Although there are limited sidewalks, the roads are roomy enough to share with drivers. “There are some really cool mid-century modern homes,” says Matt Murray, 20-year Olympian and Realtor with Van Dorm Realty, Inc. Ramblers and multi-level homes mainly comprise the neighborhood. Homes built in the 1990s and later line the community's western edge. Most well-maintained homes in the area have square footage ranging from 1,500 to 2,500, typically costing between $600,000 and $800,000. Renovated homes or those with larger interior spaces can reach up to $1 million.

Aquatic adventures and jumping salmon
“Besides the fact that it is a well-established neighborhood with beautiful greenery, Holiday Hills has its own private park on Ward Lake,” says Murray. “It is a smaller lake with public and private beaches that are great for summer swimming. And motorboats aren't allowed.” In addition to the beaches, every resident has access to the ball fields—including soccer and baseball. Another favored activity among residents is fishing for bass, trout and kokanee. The park area includes the Olympia Dog Park, an expansive grassy fenced-in field for pups to run off-leash.
Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls, a scenic 15-acre green space with waterfalls and walking trails, is less than two miles from the community. “The park overlooks the Deschutes River,” says Strauss Tomy. “During spawning season, people enjoy watching the salmon jumping during the annual salmon run. It’s cool to see.” Residents take to Tumwater Falls and other nearby parks during the fall to view the Chinook salmon return from the Pacific Ocean to nearby rivers and streams. “Pioneer Park is another area favorite. People bring their innertubes and coast down the river,” says Strauss Tomy. The Tumwater Valley Golf Club is also near the neighborhood. It spans 10 acres and offers 20 holes of championship golf. On the golf course grounds, The River’s Edge restaurant features a seafood-heavy lunch and dinner menu and hosts events such as Trivia Nights and Father’s Day Brunch.
