Small neighborhood, next to Omaha hot spot

Less than 2 miles from the bustling Benson, Benson Gardens gives buyers a chance to live near one of the hottest spots in town, without all the commotion. The small neighborhood is centrally located between Keystone and Benson, and its northern edge allows easy access to Greater Omaha. “The location is pretty unbeatable,” says Katie Huber, a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite Real Estate, who has been involved in real estate since she was 19 years old. “You can walk to places in Benson, which you can’t do in the western parts of Omaha. You have all the restaurants and nightlife a few blocks away, which is a huge draw.”

Midcentury homes with spacious lots

Shaded by mature trees neighborhood streets slope through Benson Gardens. Potential buyers can find raised ranch homes with garages and Craftsman bungalows that sit back off the road on compact lots. For those looking for maintenance-free living, Benson Garden has townhouses and apartment options as well. Prices start at around $220,000 for a two-bedroom bungalow, while a three-bedroom ranch will sell for around $245,000. “Everything is moving super-fast. If properties are priced right and updated, they move before the weekend most times,” Huber says.

Locals can head west to the Plaza 90 Shopping Center, where they can pick up groceries from the Walmart Neighborhood or grab a bite to eat from the original Romeo’s Mexican Food & Pizza that has been open since 1976. Living in Benson Gardens puts residents blocks away from the bustling nightlife and bar scene in Benson. A few blocks up Maple Street residents can catch a show at the indie rock club The Waiting Room, try sushi from Yoshitomo or enjoy craft beer in a friendly environment at the Benson Brewery.

Each July the neighboring Benson puts on Benson Days, a two-day celebration of the neighborhood’s creativity and community that features a parade, vendors on Maple Street and many events that vary from year to year. The proceeds of the event benefit the Benson Neighborhood Association.

Growing and learning in the Omaha Public Schools

Benson Gardens is districted for Omaha Public Schools, which scores as a B-minus on Niche. The district assigns schools based on street address, but parents and students can apply to enroll at any of the district’s schools. Students attend Adams Elementary, which grades a C, Monroe Middle, earning a C-minus and Northwest Magnet High School. Northwest scores a C and allows students to choose one of three academy pathways – emergency response, legal studies and public and community service – in addition to its core classes.

Staying active at nearby parks

Although there are no parks in Benson Gardens proper, residents have multiple options to stay active close to home. One of the largest and most popular parks in the city Benson Park features a popular inclusive playground, paved walking trails and in the summer, kids can beat the heat at the splash pad. At the north end of the park, the Benson Championship Golf Course is a city-owned and operated 18-hole track open to the public. Cutting through the western portion of the neighborhood is Keystone Trail, which runs along the Little Papillon Creek. The concrete surface pathway connects to the Bellevue Loop Trail and stretches 27 miles around Omaha. Serving the community since 1953, the Maple Street YMCA provides another recreation spot for residents, but also a place for after-school and summer programming for children.

Riding the Omaha Metro

Maple Street is Benson Gardens’ connection to the rest of Omaha. A section of Nebraska Highway 64, Maple Street heads right into downtown Omaha but also runs west to Interstate 680 and beyond. Commuters can ride the Omaha Metro and pick up the Route 4 Maple Street line as another option to get around.
