Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68154
If the west Omaha neighborhood of Candlewood is any indication, Lakefront living and the popularity of midcentury modern ranch-style homes have come full circle. Both were highly popular real estate options in the 1960s and '70s, when a owning a ranch house on a lake projected a certain kind of "cool." Today, the popularity of ranch-style floorplans is surging again, as young buyers find them more competitively priced than larger homes from the 1980s and ‘90s, and as new retirees seek out the ease of a one-floor living space.
Candlewood contains about 400 homes and townhomes, many of which offer views of Candlewood Reservoir. It’s a private and popular community that offers swimming, boating and fishing, as well as a nearby park and a location close to the West Dodge corridor. “It’s close to everything you could possibly want, and therefore, it’s a very popular neighborhood. Homes sell fast here,” says Nikki Diamantis, a Realtor with Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate. Waterfront ranch-style homes with atypical features like A-frame entrances and vaulted ceilings can be found for around $450,000. Updated raised ranch-style homes with 2,400 square feet and three bedrooms have recently sold for $335,000 to $460,000.
Nearby public schools are highly rated and desirable. Columbian Elementary offers pre-K through sixth grade, has an A-rating from Niche and offers a program for gifted students. Beveridge Magnet Middle provides an emphasis on Arts and Global Studies while offering an extensive array of sports programs including football, soccer, basketball and swimming. Burke High is notable for hosting the annual Nebraska State Track Meet and for offering a unique Freshmen Academy that helps students transition to high school. Students select from one of three career academies to help prepare them for future education and career success: Air & Space, Communications & Marketing, and Business & Analytics.
Candlewood Reservoir’s 35 acres sit peacefully in the center of the neighborhood. If inland fishing is a passion, you’ll enjoy catching bluegill, largemouth bass, crappie and sunfish. Nearby Candlewood II Park is within walking distance of most homes and offers seven acres with a playground, baseball and soccer fields, walking paths, a picnic shelter and plenty of open space. The Candlewood Home Owners Association (HOA) provides information about fishing permits, boat storage and RV access.
Greenbelly is a family-owned, Nebraskan original. It offers dine-in and take-out eco-friendly salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps and pizza. Try their grilled coconut chicken sandwich. Goose 120 opened in 2023 on Blondo Street to great reviews. It offers classic Italian pasta as well as veal, pork, beef and seafood entrees. Try their smoked salmon flatbread or their mini mussels with braised fennel. Westroads Mall at 100th and Dodge Street is the biggest mall in Nebraska and despite the pandemic of 2020, it is still thriving. Some of its big brands include The Container Store, DSW, H&M, and Forever 21.
When you’re planning a party or need to bring an eye-catching dessert to a get-together, check out Yami Bake Shop for their French-inspired pastries, breads and cookies. Target is located on West Maple and offers groceries as well as plenty of accessories and décorations for your new home. Costco is a short drive down West Dodge and it’s the place to go for bulk shopping.
If you’re looking for a waterfront, midcentury home with abundant updates, you’ll be delighted with the unique character of Candlewood and its quiet, relaxed vibe.
