Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68124
Cornish Heights offers homebuyers a particularly comfortable location. It’s about as close as you can get to downtown Omaha without calling your trip a “commute”. It’s also far enough from the urban center, that you’ll find spacious homes with large, well-tended lawns, without the congestion of suburban sprawl. To its immediate east is one of the stars of Omaha, the entertainment district Aksarben, with Baxter Arena and Elmwood Park in supporting roles. The community of Westgate is due south, with its highly-ranked schools and competitively-priced midcentury homes. Communities to the west include Loveland, Westside and West Central Omaha, all a short drive to Happy Hollow Golf Club, each with easy access to Papillion Creek and Big Papio Trail. Homes in Cornish Height are a big draw to medical professionals who work at Creighton University Medical Center and adjoining medical offices.
As Oscar Barrera, Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate says, “Near west Omaha neighborhoods are gaining in popularity as savvy buyers consider areas closer to the city. Not everyone wants brand-new homes or longer commutes. Buyers are realizing that they can find well-maintained or renovated homes at very competitive prices closer to downtown. In Cornish Heights that often means larger yards, too. Savvy homebuyers also realize that homes around here have excellent resale value.” You can find brick ranch-style homes with four bedrooms and about 3,200 square feet for around $540,000. Three-bedroom brick ranch-style homes from 1955 have recently sold for around $340,000.
“Families with young children want to move to this area because it’s in a great school district” adds Oscar Barrera. Westgate Elementary School offers Pre-K through Grade 6, has an enviable student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1, and has one of the most diverse student populations in the district. Niche rates Westside Middle School with an overall grade of A-, and they have the distinction of being a National Junior Honor Society chapter. Westside High School is not only ranked No. 7 of 264 for Best Public High Schools in Nebraska by Niche, but it also has athletic programs that consistently win awards, including 131 Metro Conference Titles, 91 NSAA State Championships and 548 individual state championships.
Nearby Elmwood Park is one of the oldest and most well-cultivated city parks. Considered a true oasis just south of the University of Nebraska Omaha, it includes baseball fields, an 18-hole golf course, a swimming pool, an expansive playground, and it has plenty of mature, landscaped sections such as the Grotto for events like wedding receptions.
Fans of trendy fashions will flock to Gramercy, a boutique in Countryside Plaza that takes its inspiration from the neighborhood of the same name in New York City. Nebraska Furniture Mart is way more than a furniture store. In fact, it is the largest home furnishing store of its kind in North America. From flooring to furniture, electronics to appliances, this is an absolute necessity of a destination to many Nebraskans when moving to a new home.
Nearby El Basha Mediterranean Grill has been in business for more than 20 years and while they have a loyal following, new fans continue to discover them. They boast that everything is made fresh daily. Try their Chicken Shawarma or one of their popular grilled salads. HuHot Mongolian Grill on 72nd Street is known for its amazing stir fry and unique sauces. Build your own with a selection of vegetables, meats and seafood. When you’re ready to stock up your new kitchen, Walmart Supercenter is nearby and offers just about any household goods you could need.
One of the best things about finding a home in a location like Cornish Heights is that it allows you to take advantage of the amazing assets and highly favored haunts of near west Omaha. To smart homebuyers, that’s what “there’s no place like home" really means.
