“The Show Place of Omaha” still shines with sought-after historic homes
“Country Club is cozy and charming, but it’s also elegant,” says Mary Rensch, Realtor at NP Dodge Real Estate, “and that’s thanks to its historic, early 20th-century homes.” History not only surrounds the 1920s neighborhood of Country Club in north Omaha, but it also defines the homes and their backstory. In 1860, President James Buchanan directed that 160 acres in west Omaha be granted to officers and soldiers who had recently served in the military. About half the land housed the original Omaha Country Club to the north, while the other half was designated for what became this one-of-a-kind neighborhood. Wide streets, flowering trees, ornamental cast-iron streetlights and Tudor architecture define the Country Club neighborhood to this day, living up to 1928 sales brochures proclaiming the neighborhood as “The Show Place of Omaha.”
Original homes – most still standing – feature brick and stucco construction, multiple gables, pointed arches and leaded glass diamond patterned windows. Today, it is one of the few Omaha neighborhoods on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. An active Community Council preserves the character of Country Club. “The neighborhood really benefits from the Community Council,” continues Mary Rensch, “They host seasonal events and celebrations which makes it such a friendly place to live.”
