North Omaha’s Highlander-Long School is home to historic North 24th Street, lovingly coined “The Deuce” and “Street of Dreams.” At the Deuce’s height, you could hear jazz music drifting from its buzzing clubs and cafes. "It was a hot spot for entrepreneurship, art and live music in the '40s. We're working toward building it back up,” says Realtor and North Omaha local Angel Starks of Nebraska Realty. This historically black neighborhood has faced displacement-related struggles, and grassroots efforts to increase homeownership and revitalize community spaces are prominent here.
Residential developments reflect a mix of home styles
Community-centered property development is making waves in Highlander-Long School. The modern mix of townhomes, row houses and community enrichment amenities known as Highlander is one of the newest additions. Spearheaded by Seventy Five North, it brings residents together through a shared swimming pool, green spaces, playground, community center and garden. Another mixed-use residential and retail development is in the works for the corner of North 24th and Lake. Totaling upwards to $80 million, it will be the biggest investment North Omaha has seen. Most houses in Highlander-Long School reflect small minimal traditionals with wood paneling and small to modest-sized yards where large, leafy trees cast shadows over sidewalks worn by winter and time. A three-bedroom move-in ready home recently sold here for $82,000. Home prices may rise to $180,000 in this area, but rarely exceed this. They also generally sell within 17 days — faster than the national average of 39.
Residents of Highlander-Long School take pride in their homes and their community.

Stroll along the North Omaha Trail
For a green space, “Adams Park is not too far and it’s an extension of the North Omaha Trail,” Starks says. The park is located 1 mile or a 25-to-30-minute walk away from the neighborhood's center.
