Home to the only 24/7 Christmas-themed bar in Omaha
Developed mainly in the 1950s and 60s, Keystone is a suburb full of intergenerational families. Rob Rutar, the owner of Rudy's Bar — the only 24/7 Christmas-themed bar in Omaha — says it's the kind of place he dreamed about living in High School. "There are a lot of older, nice homes here. Not mansions, just nice homes on big lots here with big trees," he says. "It's a crazy kind of twisty and turny neighborhood whereas the majority of Omaha is set up on a grid system." Rutar describes Keystone as a "floating island" as most retail and shopping options are outside the neighborhood but still close. People here work all kinds of jobs and, true to small-town living, run into each other often. "I'll have bankers and insurance guys sitting right next to mechanics and people who work from basement waterproofing places, and everyone gets along."

The pub crawl ends at Rudy's Bar
Rudy’s, on Maple Street, is always alight with festive decor no matter the time of year. It’s one of the small neighborhood bars along the borders of Keystone. The local pub crawl, which just began last year, was organized by local Realtor Linda Bischof Carpenter. It will end at Rudy’s but the bus the community hired takes them to all the pubs in the area. “Our residents try to support our local establishments as much as possible. That's what this bar crawl is about. They support us and we support them." For breakfast, lunch, brunch, and bottomless cups of coffee, locals head to Keystone Kafe on Military Avenue. Their salted caramel French toast is a favorite and the vintage atmosphere, complete with checkerboard floors, is inviting. “What’s amazing is the customers — most are from the neighborhood,” says Deb Jensen, the general manager.
Keystone cottages and ranch-styles
There isn't new development, but rather a lot of remodeling happening in Keystone as people move in and sometimes back to the area. "We raised our family in the same home I was raised in. We find that very common here," Bischof Carpenter says. "I just sold a house to a third generation — a cute young couple in the neighborhood whose parents and grandparents all live in Keystone." She describes the market here as eclectic. "There is a wide range of price points, and we are seeing — on average — 90 homes sold annually." A 1960s ranch-style home with room for love and care might begin around $170,000 in Keystone; an updated cottage with a wraparound porch for $370,000; and a remodeled midcentury modern ranch-style house may cost around $560,000. Prices rarely climb higher than that.

School scholarships funded by the Neighborhood Association
Students are served by Omaha Public Schools. Homes are zoned to the neighborhood elementary schools and Morton Middle. The elementary schools are Adams Elementary School and Boyd Elementary School. After Morton Middle, students either attend Omaha Northwest Magnet High School or Benson Magnet High School. Aside from Benson, which earns a B-minus rating, these schools all score a C from Niche. The volunteer neighborhood association, the Keystone Community Task Force, creates a scholarship fund with proceeds from their bi-annual Chili Feed that benefits the neighborhood high school students.

Laps at Keystone Klub Swimming Pool
Starting in Democracy Park, the Keystone Trail runs along the neighborhood's western border, following the Little Papillion Creek south. It travels nearly 30 miles, ending at Haworth Park in neighboring Bellevue. Keystone Park is at the heart of the neighborhood, offering a playground, a tennis court and a site for events like the summer concert in the park and a pickleball tournament. Keystone Klub Swimming Pool is there when locals want to swim laps. There's also a sports complex and two golf courses outside the neighborhood.

Westroads Mall is 3 miles south
Conveniently located near highways 133 and 64, and with Interstate 680 less than 3 miles away, Keystone provides easy access to the rest of Omaha and beyond. Most residents drive as the area isn't super walkable, but the Omaha Metro does run buses through the area, creating commuting options to nearby shops and downtown. Bus stops line the highways as do the local pubs and taverns. There is a Target on 73rd Plaza and a Walmart Supercenter for groceries and other essentials on 99th Street – both are just 2 miles from Keystone. Westroads Mall is 3 miles south, off Nicholas Street, with popular chains like Dick's Sporting Goods and Aerie and an AMC Theatre.
