A strong community 11 miles from downtown Omaha
Prairie Lane is a family-friendly place 11 miles west of downtown Omaha where it’s easy to establish lifelong bonds. "It's never a neighborhood where you drive through and all the doors are shut," says Tim Salzbrenner, a local Realtor with NP Dodge Real Estate who's sold homes in Omaha for a decade. Two shopping centers on either side and local schools within walking distance create a life of convenience, while a centralized neighborhood park, churches and community garden forge connections in Prairie Lane. But the strong community feeling is not the only thing people scoping this area out are seeking. "People like being in that Westside school district," says Sarah Maier Pavel, a Realtor with 13 years of experience who works for Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. She adds that Prairie Lane is relatively affordable, making it attractive for first time homebuyers.
Prairie Lane's suburban feeling and established homes
Simple split levels, traditional ranch styles and Colonial Revivals line Prairie Lane's gently curving streets. The housing stock is relatively low, as people live here for quite a while. This also means when a home is listed, it gets multiple offers and sells rapidly. "They are all built in the 1960s, so a lot of them are turning over from the original owner to the next owners," Salzbrenner says. "68144 is a popular zip code in general, and within that zip code is Prairie Lane. We range from $300,000 to $450,000. We're almost getting to the $500,000 mark for some homes." There are some outlying properties in the $200,000s and $600,000s and the majority of homes fall somewhere in the $300,000s. Front and back yards in Prairie Lane often have at least one or two tall, fluffy trees growing in them. Sidewalks winding around the neighborhood are well-used for daily walks. Salzbrenner says people stop to chat as they stroll through the neighborhood and spend time outside on their spacious lawns.
Tornado season in Omaha
Omaha is known for its snowy weather, getting upwards of 30 inches a year. Given the frequency of snowfall, the city's snow removal efforts are robust and proactive and there is even emergency snow routes designated throughout the city. "Our weather is sporadic. We generally get four full seasons, and over the past few years, we've had some snowfall, but I wouldn't stay it was anything unmanageable," Pavel says. She adds that, if anything, Omaha has become more of a windy city. Tornado season — typically from April through June — can hit Prairie Lane hard. "This last year, we were without power for almost 7 days in our neighborhood, and we had trees down everywhere," Salzbrenner says. "I'd say 20 to 30 homes had pretty significant property damage."
Prairie Lane Elementary School is a walk away
Public schools in Prairie Lane are through the Westside Community School District. Prairie Lane Elementary School is within walking distance of any home, while Westside Middle School and Westside High School are less than 4 miles northeast. In 2023, a teacher at the elementary school – Sandra Fey – was recognized for her work in inspiring students, earning the Bravo Award from the nonprofit organization Westside Foundation. If parents aren’t starting their kids' education off at Prairie Lane Elementary, which earns an A rating on Niche, they likely send them to the A-minus rated Mary Our Queen Catholic School. This school is also in the neighborhood and serves preschool to eighth grade. Westside Middle School earns a B rating, and Westside High scores an A minus.
Prairie Lane is pedestrian friendly
If someone's traveling locally, there may be no need for a car, especially if they work at the school. “My math teacher from my grade school lives in the area, and she’s never owned a car. I think she’s in her 70s. She walks everywhere,” Salzbrenner says. And when it's time to commute out, residents have a fast track as interstates 680 and 80 feed into each other on Prairie Lane’s eastern edge. Both Methodist Hospital and Children’s Hospital Nebraska are within 4 miles of Prairie Lane. Eppley Airfield is around 20 miles away, following Interstate 80.
Pickleball at Prairie Lane Park
Prairie Lane Park is in the center of the neighborhood alongside Prairie Lane Elementary. A huge hub for pickleball, the park has 10 courts, which are open to the public at specific times during the day and partially reserved by the Pickleball Omaha Club throughout the week. The park’s over 7 acres also offer a small baseball field, open space for long walks and a community pool that locals can join through membership. When residents want to tee up, the public Westwood Golf Course and private Happy Hollow Club are within 2 miles. Just north of Happy Hollow Club are several city parks, including Cancer Survivors Park, a place of reflection for cancer patients and their families and friends, filled with plaques with messages and statues.
Report In Pub for a beer, Big Fred's for pizza
Salzbrenner shares that most favorite local shopping and dining is within a mile or two. "There's a bar and grille down the street called the Report In Pub. That is a popular spot close by. There's a breakfast place called Bailey's and a local pizza company called Big Fred's. And the last one is a fine dining place called Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse." Several shopping corridors just west and east offer more local spots and chains from HomeGoods to T.J. Maxx to Walgreens to Starbucks and Bruegger's Bagels. The closest grocery store is Baker's, which Salzbrenner says many residents walk to. The two other shopping centers people frequent are Village Point Mall and One Pacific Place, which has a Trader Joe's. Both are within 8 miles.
Movie nights on the lawn at Prairie Lane Park
From annual garage sales to easter egg hunts to movie nights on the lawn, neighborhood events are robust and primarily organized by the neighborhood association. Most of these events are held between the local pool and churches. "At Mary Our Queen Catholic Church, they do a fall festival. All the people from the neighborhood come," Salzbrenner says. "And they just had a trunk or treat event that had 500 people show up." Prairie Lane Church also offers a community garden and a food bank.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
