A suburban West Omaha community
While its name may feel otherworldly, Skylark-Cryer is far from that. In fact, this small community exemplifies classic suburban Omaha living. Here, most residents live in updated midcentury dwellings that often sit on half-acre lots of land. This gives people enough room to cultivate an at-home garden or host backyard parties, but the neighborhood also boasts its own recreational spot: the Cryer Community Pool. It's even where the community hosts its annual Fourth of July block party. Just northwest of the pool are unique establishments like Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse & Winery — known for its high-quality meat and servers dressed as monks — and Shucks Fish House & Oyster Barn — a spot that grew from its place at a fish market — which have become gems among locals here. Some residents can even walk to these establishments or the local schools. Being less than 15 miles from downtown Omaha is an added bonus of this community.
Skylark-Cryer is a neighborhood in West Omaha with established homes and businesses.

Renovated midcentury homes
Tucked among a canopy of greenery and situated on spacious grassy lots are various non-HOA properties that typically reflect midcentury architectural trends. Ranch-style dwellings and classic split-levels make up most housing units that line curving streets. Although rarer, the community is also home to some Colonial Revivals and storybook Tudor Revivals. Most of these homes feature attached garages. "Homeowners in Skylark-Cryer are very house-proud, and updating their homes is a labor of love," says Gillian Hanus, a Realtor with Nebraska Realty who has experience throughout Omaha. "Because of that, homes on the market often move within 24 hours." She adds, "Another thing that is distinctive is the number of homes here that are exceptionally well-maintained." Many of the properties that come on the market are already updated or fully renovated. Prices largely depend on the lot and house size; they range from about $300,000 to just upward of $600,000.
Beautiful, shady ranches are also a very popular style of home in Skylark-Cryer.

A community pool and nearby recreational fun
When summer rolls around, Skylark-Cryer residents head in droves to the local outdoor pool. "We're very lucky to have Cryer Community Pool," Hanus says. "Not every neighborhood has a community pool, and it really helps give kids something fun to do during the summer." It's here that the annual Fourth of July parade ends and the block party begins. Locals spend the morning feasting on classic summer food and playing games. For other recreational fun, people here can head to the nearby Prairie Lane Park to practice their swing on the baseball field or take a stab at pickleball. Also nearby is the Chalco Hills Recreation Area, which is less than 10 miles away. Anglers head to the lake to catch species like Blue Gill while hikers make their way through trails that circle the water. Golfers can purchase a membership at the Happy Hollow Club, a space just east of the community.

Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse & Winery and other local establishments
For food out, Hanus recommends Shucks Fish House & Oyster Bar. "Seafoodies love this place. It's small, but people rave about it," says Hanus. "And we're so lucky that it's actually walkable for most of us." This establishment, along with many others, is in the commercial corridor that takes up a slice of the neighborhood's northwestern section. It's home to the award-winning Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse & Winery. Here, patrons immerse themselves in an environment modeled after some of California's Spanish monasteries. Many people especially enjoy the intimate nature of booth seating that is tucked next to a wall of books and the friendly servers dressed as monks. Those craving flavorful chapli kababs take a seat at Shahen Afghan Restaurant. The adjoining Shahen Supermarket is where locals can pick up groceries, but they can also head to a nearby Trader Joe's location. Shopping enthusiasts here won't be far from hot spots like the Westwood Plaza and Bel Air Plaza.
