Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68107, 68117
The history of many Omaha neighborhoods includes both rapid development and historic preservation. South Central Omaha was completely rural until the 1880s. Cattle baron Alexander Hamilton Swan changed that when he established one of the first stockyards. As jobs were plentiful and demand great, homes were quickly built to welcome waves of immigrants from Greece, Italy, Spain, Lithuania and Bulgaria. The pace of growth was so rapid that it earned the nickname “The Magic City”. At its peak, the area housed nearly 40,000 residents, whereas today there are about 3,000.
While immigrants continued to arrive and then moved onto western neighborhoods, South Central still honors much of its early history. Its lively parks, the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, historic Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, and a few hundred historic homes are protected and preserved without reservation. In keeping with a historic neighborhood, you’ll find an assortment of home styles and ages from turn-of-the-20th century cottages and bungalows, to mid-century modern ranch-style homes and split-levels. You can find well-updated cottages from the 1930s for about $190,000 to $230,000. Four-bedroom split-levels from the 1970s can be found from $210,000 to $240,000 depending on the condition and location of the home.
Gateway Elementary offers pre-K through sixth grade, is a dual language school and is notable for offering a mobile dental clinic and onsite vision screening in partnership with Children’s Hospital. R. M. Mars Magnet Middle provides fifth through eighth grade and also features a dual language program. Omaha South Magnet High is the only Omaha Public (OPS) high school in the neighborhood, although Bryan High is nearby in the Bellevue neighborhood. There are also several private schools in and around the city of Omaha that serve K through twelfth grade.
South Central Omaha may be an urban neighborhood, but you’ll find plenty of ways to feel that you’re in the countryside when you visit one of its 15 neighborhood parks. From pocket parks to expansive municipal gardens, you’ll have plenty of sites to discover close to home. Seymour Smith Park has 197 acres of seemingly endless attractions. From lighted tennis courts, baseball fields, and a skeet and trap shooting range, to a skate park and a disc golf course, visitors can spend entire days in this award-winning park and still not see all of it. It is located alongside Big Papillion Creek and the Papio Trail, providing biking and walking access both north and south of the park.
Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is another destination that puts South Central Omaha on the map. Notable for its progressive approach to conservation and research, this zoo is awarded for its educational programs and its creatively designed exhibits.
Ethnic restaurants highlight the dining landscape in South Central Omaha. Isla del Mar Restaurant offers fresh caught Mexican seafood, stunningly crafted sushi and two types of ceviche. When you’re craving a burger or pizza, kick it up a notch with a visit to 72 Table and Tap. Their menu is enticing and their list of sauces will have you trying something new with each visit. Groceries and fresh foods can be found in any direction. Supermercado Nuestra on Q Street offers fresh meats and seafood, as well as authentic Hispanic products. You’ll find Walmart conveniently located at the corner of L and 50th Streets.
If you want to live close to downtown and be surrounded by the sights and sounds of a diverse neighborhood you just might be delighted by the heart of “The Magic City”.
