An original Omaha neighborhood
The Vinton Street Commercial Historic District – sitting between Elm and South 17th Street – developed alongside the Union Stockyards and boom of South Omaha, original Italianate and Colonial buildings dating back to the late 19th century. Modern businesses have moved into the historical buildings, and Vinton Street as a community has greatly used what already existed. Residents come from all walks of heritage backgrounds and focus on keeping the community lively. From restored residential homes to using a decommissioned church space for events, this neighborhood is tightly interwoven and secured with South Omaha’s energy.
The long-standing Vinton Street homes
Skirting the edges of downtown Omaha, the homes in Vinton Street share blocks with local businesses, with residents in walking distance of the nearest corner market or clothing boutique. Houses in Vinton Street have weathered the years, many dating back to the early 1900s. Common architectural styles along the narrow sidewalks include the ever-classic bungalows and original Tudor brick cottages, concrete steps built into the small hillsides of front yards. While many homes have been well-maintained or restored, some could not be salvaged – and in empty lots, small contemporary properties have been built. Older homes that need restoration can start as low as $100,000, and the price goes up with square footage and how new or restored a property is. Still, it hardly ever exceeds $250,000, much lower than the Omaha single-family average of $315,000.
Vinton Street offers many varieties of homes.

Pathways to education
Vinton Street is served by the district of Omaha Public Schools, and children can start their education at Castelar Elementary, graded with a C-minus on Niche. The school regularly hosts Family Night, where they invite family of the students to work on projects and tackle learning games. Children move on to Norris Middle, graded with another C-minus, before finishing basic education at Omaha South Magnet High. Graded with an overall C-plus but an A-minus for activities, Omaha South Magnet has an extensive and diverse selection of extracurriculars, especially for STEM.

Following the namesake road – Vinton Street – residents can find all their daily essentials, and many businesses in the area are locally owned and operated. There are a few recognizable chain stops, like AutoZone and Walgreens, but most shops and restaurants are unique to the neighborhood. The aisles of Family Fare Supermarket stay busy as people shop for groceries; the best slices of tres leche cake come from Nietos Pasteleria, and Louie M’s Burgerlust has been doling out hearty Americana breakfast and lunch in their diner since 1980.
