Suburban Neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
Douglas County 68106
“Savvy homebuyers have really caught on to historic Omaha neighborhoods,” says Oscar Barrera, Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. “They like the variety and flexibility of the ranch-style homes around here. Many that come to market are nicely updated if not fully renovated and buyers know that’s great for resale value.” West Albright/Bonfield is a perfect example of a historic Omaha neighborhood that is “no longer a hidden gem”, continues Barrera. “These historic downtown neighborhoods are strong examples of the power of urban transformation. It’s hard to beat attractively priced homes with proximity to great schools, shopping, restaurants and the interstate.”
Ideally located right between Aksarben-Elmwood Park to the north and South Central Omaha to the south, West Albright/Bonfield offers incredible access to shopping, schools, parks, hospitals and several major employers including the University of Nebraska Omaha, Creighton Medical Center and Kiewit Corporation. While you can easily have views of the downtown skyline, most streets here are tree-lined with nicely paved sidewalks, making it hard to believe you’re in an urban neighborhood.
You may be surprised by the size ranges of available ranch-style homes in the neighborhood. Recently sold properties have ranged from three bedrooms with 1,900 square feet for about $270,000 to four bedrooms with just over 3,600 square feet for $340,000. Well-updated split-level homes from the mid-1970s have recently sold for about $250,000. You’ll also find newer brick townhomes with two to three bedrooms and around 1,550 square feet from about $220,000 to $235,000.
Beals Elementary Redbirds attend pre-K through sixth grade and enjoy a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Norris Middle School offers sixth through eighth grade and has a highly diverse population as well as a Dual Language Program. Omaha South Magnet High serves grades 9-12 and emphasizes information technology and the visual and performing arts.
Churchich Park offers a baseball field, basketball and tennis courts, walking paths and a large playground. Little Papillion Creek flows right through the neighborhood offering residents access to its nearby walking and biking trail. Inland fishing enthusiasts can catch catfish, carp and largemouth bass depending on the season. When you’re looking to recapture youthful memories, or just want to try something new, Grover Ice Rink is in the exact middle of the neighborhood and offers public skating every day of the week.
Urban living offers a wide variety of dining venues and some of the best are right in the neighborhood. El Pollo Tote Mexican Grill opened in 2018 and kept right on going during the 2020 pandemic, thanks to their dedication, reliable takeout and their unique breakfast menu. Fans enjoy their rewards program which can earn you up to $100 off your next party. Billy’s Café at Grover Plaza is known for their traditional country-style breakfast menu and their “Build-Your-Breakfast” options.
West Albright/Bonfield is located just south of the historic and hip mixed-use community of Aksarben Village, which is a premier entertainment and shopping spot in downtown Omaha. You can easily walk, bike or drive to trendy shops, restaurants, bars, and parks. Close to home you’ll find Family Fare Supermarket and Walmart when you need to stock up your kitchen or plan for your next family get-together.
It’s hard to beat the advantages of living close to downtown Omaha. But if you’re fortunate enough to find a well-updated mid-century home in West Albright/Bonfield, you may find that “lucky for life” means something even better than winning the Nebraska lottery.
