While the first suburban homes in Wood Bridge were built in the 1960s, the neighborhood developed thoughtfully over the following 50 years. That is, in fact, a distinguishing characteristic of Wood Bridge that sets it apart from other west Omaha neighborhoods. While the age of properties vary, the home styles are all classic midcentury, from raised ranch and ranch-style homes, split entry, split level and a handful of Colonial Revivals. The overall effect is of a carefully planned, mid-sized community of strictly modern homes. Properties range from 1,200 to 3,000 square feet with newer homes being the largest.

You’ll find three-bedroom split-entry homes from the 1990s for about $270,000. Raised ranch-style homes from the early 2000s have recently sold for $285,000 - $300,000. Realtor Warren Wood, with The Rensch Group/NP Dodge Real Estate confirms the midcentury vibe. “Wood Bridge is a well-developed neighborhood with a perfectly blended mix of 1960s homes – many that are well updated – with newer and brand-new midcentury properties. This careful blending has really preserved the unique character here.”

Many homes are within walking distance of, or a very short drive to local elementary and middle schools. Pinewood Panthers attend pre-K through fifth grade at this north-central Omaha elementary school. The school also offers a unique Superintendent’s Plan for Success that has created resources for families with children from birth to Grade 3. This creates a supportive connection between the school and neighborhood families, even if the students are not yet school-age. Nathan Hale Magnet is a highly diverse middle school serving kids from sixth through eighth grade. To honor the school’s namesake, the magnet theme is Leadership and Social Justice. Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles in school and in the larger community fulfilling the belief that young people can shape the future of our nation in positive ways. Omaha Northwest Magnet High offers a Freshman Academy to help students plan for success throughout their high school career. It also offers more than 40 honors programs.

A short distance north is Omaha Country Club, an enduring fixture in the west Omaha community since 1899. As a well-known and well-respected golf club, it has twice hosted the U.S. Senior Open over the past 10 years. Stillmeadow Park is a tiny but convenient pocket park right at the corner of 78th and Mary Streets. It has paved walking paths, a playground, a basketball court and picnic space. It’s a great place to take the kids for some swing time, or your K-9 family members when they need a walk. When you’re ready to put your own parklike touches to your new yard, visit nearby Colorado Blue LLC. Founded in 2008, this local nursery sells and professionally installs locally grown spruce trees. Long-lived and hearty, spruces provide winter shelter for birds and wildlife, are heat and drought-tolerant, and increase the value of your property.

When you’re craving authentic Mexican cuisine, head over to Muchacho Alegre for lunch, dinner or takeout. Try their popular fajita bowl. Seafood lovers will appreciate Yummy Crab’s all-day pick-up menu and plenty of kid-friendly items. Onsite dining is available but get there early as it is often busy. Fans rave about the steamed shrimp and crab legs.

For trendy and funky clothes and accessories, check out Vaiv Apparel. Ross Dress for Less is on the south edge of the neighborhood and is a great place to go to stock up on housewares for your new home. Big Lots is right inside the neighborhood and is the perfect place for discounted bulk purchases. Asian Market, on 76th Street, offers hard-to-find spices, sauces and grocery items as well as fresh sushi in their café.

There’s a lot to appreciate as you settle into your new home in Wood Bridge. From the quiet location, and the well-tended look of the tree-lined streets and cul de sacs, to the paved sidewalks and nearby park. But the best part may be enjoying the strictly modern vibe that is its own.
