A Tennessee college town accented with childhood nostalgia

Like the iconic Little Debbie treats made here, Collegedale offers a taste of sweetness and childhood nostalgia. From the weekly farmer’s market at The Commons to the whimsical playground at Little Debbie Park, the comforts of this small Tennessee neighborhood create a welcoming vibe just 18 miles east of Downtown Chattanooga. “It’s a great little community to raise a family,” says Realtor Ryan May with Real Estate Partners Chattanooga. “Collegedale offers a slower-paced lifestyle, but it’s also going through a period of growth. There are new homes going up all over the community.” Because of the Volkswagen Group of America moving its headquarters to Chattanooga, just west of Collegedale, the community has experienced steady growth over the last 20 years. The Southern Adventist University lies at the heart of Collegedale, which was built around the college in 1916.

New home construction is on the rise in Collegedale

Collegedale consists of several neat, established subdivisions, many of which are laid out in cul-de-sacs. The residential areas themselves are walkable and populated with tidy sidewalks, but residents drive to get into the shopping districts, peppering Collegedale and the surrounding areas. “It's a little sleepier; it's not the hustle and bustle of East Brainerd or Ooltewah proper,” says Collin Rogers, real estate agent with Greater Chattanooga, Keller Williams Realty. New traditional-style homes are most common, though among the older developments, Colonial Revivals, split levels and ranch-style homes are popular. Two-bedroom houses range from $250,000 to $400,000, while homes with five bedrooms or more range from $500,000 to $750,000.

One-of-a-kind Little Debbie Park is a popular spot for kids

The 10-acre Little Debbie Park is a neighborhood standout. Visitors are greeted with a bronze statue of Little Debbie, modeled after the granddaughter of the snack-cake company founder presenting a plate of Swiss Rolls. “A lot of people don’t know, but Little Debbie is a real person, and she’s still alive and living in Collegedale,” says Rogers. “And she doesn’t look much different.” Debra McKee-Fowler is now an executive for McKee Foods, the family business that owns the brand. The neighborhood’s history is intertwined with the famous baked goods company and the family that started it all, as Rogers points out. “They’re a huge part of the community and its development.” Furthering the individually wrapped playground theme, children can climb on the giant Christmas Tree Cake sculptures. The park also features a zipline, a rock-climbing structure and a hill popular for sledding. Just next door is Enterprise South Nature Park, a 2,800-acre wooded expanse with paved and natural hiking spots, many of which have an easy to moderate levels of difficulty. This spot also has a dog park and a disc golf course. Nearby, White Oak Mountain Trails is a nature preserve popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The park consists of nearly 25 miles of trails threading through the woods and creeks, each with varying degrees of difficulty.

Local restaurants offer healthy foods and favorite cuisines

The College Plaza Shopping Center is across the street from Southern Adventist University and offers a U.S. Post Office and Village Market, which is known for its selection of vegetarian items and locally grown food. Cambridge Square, a mixed-use development built as the community expanded after Volkswagen came to town, offers more shopping and dining options, as well as housing. “It has a more high-end vibe because it's got those local restaurants and boutiques and shops, but it's also got doctors and dentists and housing.” For bigger shopping trips, there's a Walmart Supercenter at the northern tip of Collegedale. For lunch or dinner, 4 Corners Café is a favorite spot for grilled panini and bubble tea. The restaurant doubles as a little free library, with an array of books to choose from on its back wall. Aji Peruvian Restaurant serves traditional Peruvian food from an unassuming outdoor shopping plaza.

The Commons hosts year-round concerts and craft shows

In addition to hosting weekly farmers markets and being a popular destination for weddings and corporate events, The Commons hosts popular year-round events, including a Mother’s Day Gala each May and the well-loved Christkindlmarkt during the holiday season. Musical performances are held monthly and feature artists across folk, bluegrass, classical and jazz. “I mean, there’s always something going on,” says Rogers. “Smith Perry Farms is big— they have sunflower fields, so it’s a huge Instagram moment.” Smith Perry Berries Farm is known for its “you-pick” concept, allowing visitors to peruse the farm and pick their own selection of strawberries, pumpkins, sunflowers and other seasonal favorites.
