Older ranch homes just west of downtown Opelika

Westside, naturally, sits roughly 2 miles west of downtown Opelika. Younger homebuyers often look to the neighborhood for its older ranch-style homes, highly rated schools, and quick access to downtown and the Tiger Town Shopping Center. “It’s a good first-time homebuyer area,” says Ashley Hedden, a Realtor with Keller Williams Auburn Opelika who grew up there. “It’s a more affordable area for Opelika.”

First-time buyers and renters in Westside

Westside has a quiet residential character, thanks in large part to the neighborhood only having one entrance and one exit. Old-growth pines and oaks shade its narrow streets lined with one-story houses from the 1960s and ’70s. The ranch-style homes often come with relatively large front yards and backyards cordoned off by chain-link fences. Prices range from the mid-$100,000s through the mid-$200,000s. Prices tend to be more affordable than other Opelika neighborhoods, which attracts many first-time homebuyers. “You see a lot of rentals in there,” Hedden adds. “The houses you see going on the market often get put back on the market as rentals.”

Local colleges and universities such as Auburn University and Southern Union State Community College partner with Opelika City Schools to offer dual-enrollment high school programs.

For groceries, Wright’s Market is just across the street from the neighborhood. Otherwise, a Walmart Supercenter is slightly over 2 miles away, and shopping centers are further down Highway 14. Almost 3 miles towards Interstate 85, the Tiger Town Outdoor Shopping Center offers big-box stores like Target and Home Depot and plenty of fast-casual eats. Downtown Opelika has plenty of options for a sit-down meal, including Zazu Gastropub. “Zazu’s is three stories, and I love to sit on the third-story patio there,” Hedden says. “You can see the courthouse from there, and if you look to the right, you can see the train tracks and the train coming by.”
