A social community
Dogwood Azalea offers residents a broad range of services they need for daily life. The neighborhood has access to restaurants, highly rated schools, one of Kentucky’s only ice hockey rinks and access to an award-winning health park. The residential blocks are known for their quiet atmosphere and proximity to the flourishing downtown. Realtor Brian Luttrell, who sells homes in the neighborhood with RE/MAX Professional Realty Group, says that the residents of Dogwood Azalea know their neighbors and socialize with each other regularly. “A lot of people grew up here and decided to stay or come back for the low cost of living and to be close to friends and family,” Luttrell says. “When you walk through the neighborhood, you run into people doing stuff like walking dogs, riding bikes, jogging and pushing babies in strollers.”
Bungalows, Craftsman styles and Colonial Revivals
Many homes in the neighborhood were built decades ago, so old-growth oak trees that shade yards are and detached garages common. The most affordable houses are north of West Parish Avenue, where early 20th-century bungalows are priced from $100,000 to $150,000. South of the avenue, 1950s brick ranch-style houses are priced from $190,000 to $580,000. Craftsman-style homes from the 1920s are priced from $200,000 to $515,000. The neighborhood’s 1940s Colonial Revival-style homes are priced from $430,00 to $570,000. Newly built Colonial Revival-style townhomes on the neighborhood’s south end are priced from $330,000 to $760,000. “A lot of the homes are older, and while some have started to be renovated, most have not. People like to put their own touch on them,” says Realtor Matt Brown, who sells houses in Dogwood Azalea with Keller Williams Elite.

A cluster of shopping and dining options called Wesleyan Park Plaza nestles against the neighborhood’s southeast corner. Windy Hollow Biscuit House is a classic neighborhood diner with a lacquered hardwood lunch counter and walls decorated with American mid-century iconography like film posters and gas station signs. The gift shop sells candy, soap, stuffed animals and more. Locally owned since 1918, Old Hickory Bar-B-Q serves comfort classics like fried chicken, mutton and catfish. Pan Asian Chinese & Japanese Food is a popular takeout joint. There are also options like McDonald’s, Starbucks and Kroger.

The park is also home to the Edge Ice Center, one of only four rinks in Kentucky. The rink is open year-round for public skating, skate lessons and youth ice hockey matches.
The Owensboro PorchFest and Owensboro Sportscenter
Each summer, the neighborhood shuts down its streets for the Owensboro PorchFest. The event attracts thousands of visitors who set up camping chairs in the front lawns of homes along Griffith Avenue to watch bands perform. Next door to Moreland Park, Owensboro Sportscenter is a 5,000-seat arena that hosts graduations, professional concerts and rodeos. After the bell rings, high school students can walk next door to Daviess County Public Library to do homework or read. Residents can also walk directly north to the downtown, home to the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and the Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum. The Bluegrass Hall of Fame frequently features performances and lessons from professional bluegrass artists.
Owensboro Health Healthpark and Owensboro Health Regional Hospital
One of the neighborhood’s most sought-after features is an urgent care center and a health park that includes a gym with trainers, massage therapists, an aquatics center, saunas, whirlpool spas and professional nutritionists. In 2024, the health park was voted the best gym/fitness center in the city. Owensboro Health Regional Hospital is about 4 miles north of the neighborhood via Kentucky Route 54.
