Maceo’s farmland by the highway
Almost 10 miles outside Owensboro, Maceo is an independent rural community at the junction of Highway 60 and 231. And although it's an unincorporated area, locals view it as a town, says Realtor Gail Niehaus of Century 21 Prestige, who's sold homes all over Owensboro. This perception is because of the neighborhood's size and the independent spirit among the community's homeowners. Many residents spend their time close to home, tending to gardens and maintaining multi-acre farmland. When locals want to go to restaurants and stores, the neighborhood's two major highways lead toward larger Kentucky cities, like Lewisport and Owensboro, or across the Ohio River into Indiana. With a CAP Index crime score of 1, residents lead quiet, rural lifestyles among the farmland of East Daviess County.

Backyard farms, sheds and garden beds
Maceo is within a Rural Service Area, or an A-R Rural Agriculture Zone. This zoning means agricultural land use is protected while urban development is heavily restricted. While not all homeowners have farmland attached to their properties, expansive agricultural fields surround the entire neighborhood. Homes almost exclusively come in bungalow and ranch styles built between the 1900s and the early 2000s. Prices are just as diverse as ages, with properties ranging between $50,000 and $250,000. However, these prices heavily depend on the home's square footage and the amount of upkeep and renovation. Houses sit relatively close together, yet yards are still spacious, accommodating sheds, garden beds, multi-car driveways and the occasional carport. Towering trees shade some lawns entirely while leaving others to bask in the sunlight. Although Maceo is roughly 3 miles from the Ohio River, farmland and some homes are occasionally affected by heavy seasonal flooding. However, damage is rare since the water typically rises gradually.
Maceo residents take pride in maintaining their land.

Casino expected to bring jobs to Maceo
Maceo is a quiet "spot in the road," as Niehaus likes to describe unincorporated communities. "It's a small town. It doesn't have a lot to offer, but there is a casino being built in the Maceo area," she says. "That will become the biggest, brightest spot in Maceo." While not officially inside the neighborhood, the project is expected to bring 150 new jobs for residents. Named Owensboro Racing and Gaming, the casino will offer a sports bar restaurant and over 600 slots-style horse racing machines. Outside the thrills of betting, Maceo is about 7 miles from the closest restaurants and shops. Nearby options are along the eastern edge of Owensboro and inside the city of Rockport, Indiana, which are almost the same distance from the town. Lewisport is 8 miles north and also an option, offering DG Market, Crossroads IGA, Dollar General and laidback eateries like Krispy Krunchy Chicken and JJ's Pizza.
The community of Maceo is hardworking and driven.

Sporting Clays Championship at Mattingly Target Shooting Range
With all of Maceo's trees and farmland, the neighborhood is visually very green, but the closest recreational parks are a few miles away. Two miles south is the Mattingly Target Shooting Range, formerly known as the Daviess County Gun Club. Open on weekends, March through mid-December, the range hosts regular events, including the 2024 Kentucky State Sporting Clays Championship. Four more miles south is The Pearl Club, a semi-private golf course, and Yellow Creek Park, home to the annual Romp Bluegrass Music Festival. Yellow Creek also offers traditional park amenities, like walking trails, playgrounds and sports fields. Eight miles north of Maceo, visitors admire sweeping views of the Ohio River at the tiny Millennium Park in Lewisport.

Highway 60 to Owensboro and Highway 231 to Indiana
Living in a rural area, residents are entirely car-dependent. The main road running through Maceo is Kentucky State Route 2830, but nearby is also the intersection of Highway 60 and 231. Highway 60 reaches Downtown Owensboro in about 10 miles, which Niehaus says gets locals to shops, restaurants and employers in roughly 15 minutes. Highway 231 becomes a bridge over the Ohio River into Indiana. For air travel, the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport is 17 miles southwest.
