Downtown Oxford has a history
Downtown Oxford has welcomed small business owners and restauranteurs since the mid-1800s. Since then, the area continues to feature shops and restaurants in timeless brick buildings in the historic district. One street can have homes from the early 1900s, 1980s and early 2000s, but many were renovated to give homeowners modern amenities in homes with classic designs. When people want to get out of the house, they might hang out at Powell Lake Township Park or head to Centennial Park in the summer to catch a live concert or relax on one of the benches. “Downtown Oxford isn’t like other small cities in Michigan,” says Leila Modetz, a Realtor with EXP Realty who works in the area. “Other small cities have one traffic light and that’s it. We have big city amenities like the theatre, all the restaurants and a helpful community. People get together to help their neighbors.” Residents who enjoy supporting small local businesses and eating good food will find their people in Downtown Oxford.

Supporting local businesses along South Washington Street
Downtown Oxford features multiple locally owned eateries for residents to enjoy. “Of course, the restaurants and cafes in Oxford are always a great place to grab a bite to eat or relax with friends,” says Ventimiglia-Valls. Victoria's Delights Bistro and Cocktail Bar offers homemade, French-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner. “Victoria’s has a New York bistro feel, and it’s a popular date night spot. Their lavender lemonade is great,” Modetz says. “Sick Pizza Company also has a good gluten-free pizza.” The OX Bar & Grill is popular for their local brews, traditional American grub and wood-fired pizzas.
In addition to busy restaurants, South Washington Street features locally owned shops. Residents pop into Oxford Outfitters for sportswear or The Boulevard Boutique & Home Collection for everyday clothing. Funky Monkey Toys started selling toys in 2010 and continues to be a popular spot for kids and parents looking for fun gifts. When locals want to pick up a few groceries, they can head north to shop at Meijer or south to visit the Kroger off North Park Boulevard.

Colonial and Craftsman homes with history
While new businesses and restaurants push Downtown Oxford to the future, the neighborhood stays true to its roots with classic home styles. Many homes feature Colonial, national and Craftsman designs. A home with bay windows, a moderate front porch and Italianate-style detailing might sit next to a small bungalow with a wide front porch and stone detailing. Future homeowners can also find Colonial-style homes with symmetrical windows and brick siding. “There are four new subdivisions being built, and that’s been going on for the past year,” Modetz says. Home prices often range from $200,000 for a three-bedroom home with over 1,500 square feet to $400,000 for a three-bedroom home with over 2,000 square feet.

Summer fun at Centennial Park
Powell Lake Township Park welcomes visitors of all ages to take in the fresh air as they hang out on the playground equipment or go for a walk along the hiking trail. The 132-acre park also features multiple athletic fields, a disc golf course and a summer farmers market. Fishing enthusiasts and kayakers spend the day on the water at Seymour Lake Township Park. Every summer, locals bring their lawn chairs out to Centennial Park to join the live concert series every Thursday night. “There’s always something going on, year-round. We have Labor Day parades, library events, fireworks, you name it,” Sioma says.
B-pluses all around for Downtown Oxford schools
Kids start out at Oxford Elementary School before moving on to Oxford Middle School. Before graduating from Oxford High School, students might try out for the district-champion boys’ soccer team or think on their feet during an OHS improv show. All three schools get a B-plus from Niche.

Catch the trolley or take Highway 24
The Downtown Oxford community recently brought back the Trolley Express. On specific Saturdays, residents can hop on the trolley to get around downtown. Most days, residents walk down the paved sidewalks to the different shops along Washington Street or to visit their neighbors. Those who want to visit Lake Orion to go fishing or need to visit the grocery store drive down U.S. Highway 24, the major road that runs down the middle of the neighborhood. “We see traffic in the morning and evening when people are going to or leaving work. But traffic isn’t an issue during the rest of the day,” Modetz says

Cultivating a spirit of community at Immanuel Congregational
As both Modetz and Sioma say, the Downtown Oxford community looks out for each other and offers support when a neighbor needs help. The Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ follows this attitude by welcoming families to enjoy a free dinner on Tuesday afternoons or grab a free meal on Wednesday afternoons. Volunteers from the area come to the church to pass out food to those who need it.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
