Countryside recreation in Oxford Township

Amid the backdrop of Oxford Mountain, forested roads give way to the front porches of Oxford Township homes – a rural community of Warren County, dating back to 1798. Offering countryside recreation and rural peace, locals can spend their time taking part in outdoor adventure or traveling 40 miles to Allentown, Pennsylvania or 65 miles to New York City. “It’s really just a slice of the country, right there still in reach of big cities,” says Thomasina Cerciello, real estate agent with EXIT Realty and longtime resident of the area. “There’s a real rural charm to the area that a lot of people don’t think of when they think about New Jersey.”

Traditional homes with plenty of yard space

Hanging plants and rocking chairs are among the common touches that adorn the countryside homes in Oxford Township, with Colonial Revivals, ranch styles, Cape Cods and other traditional-style homes making up most of the homes here. Thanks to the rural landscape, homes are often spread out and feature plenty of yard space. While some streets have sidewalks, the homes in this car-dependent community feature driveways and detached backyard garages as well. Prices typically range from $150,000 to $450,000, though large modern estates can reach up to $750,000. Condominiums and townhouses are also available, with prices from $225,000 to $275,000.

Hiking at Oxford Mountain

Oxford Mountain is part of the Appalachian Mountains, rising more than 950 feet and providing bikers, hikers and walkers winding trails and scenic forest views. Less than 3 miles away, Lake Marguerite Wildlife Refuge features even more trails, along with cascading waterfalls and a pond for fishing. Oxford Furnace Lake is another scenic waterfront that allows swimming and kayaking. “Oxford Furnace Lake and the area around it are stunning,” says Cerciello. “It just feels like picturesque countryside.” Erected in 1741, the Oxford Furnace is the longest-running Colonial-era furnace and operated until 1884. Remnants of the town's mining history are visible at the Shippen Manor Museum, which is recognized as a National Geographic Geotourism Destination and dates back to the 18th century.
