A community-focused neighborhood
Named for William Dewey Hobson – the man referred to as “the father of Ventura County” for his efforts to separate it from Santa Barbara County – the Hobson Park East neighborhood of Oxnard emanates a community spirit. Whether it’s neighbors gathering at the community center for a get-together, taking a Tai Chi class at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center or touring the historic homes at Heritage Square, there is a pervading sense of camaraderie. "You’re close to downtown, Heritage Square and the community center. You get that community feel from the neighborhood," says local real estate agent Keziah Aaliyah, who has been representing transactions in the area for more than a decade.

So much to see and do
Anchoring the neighborhood’s western edge and supporting the collegial atmosphere is Community Center Park, where visitors will find a playground, a basketball court, walking paths and benches for relaxing. It’s also the home to the neighborhood community center, which serves as both a gathering spot for residents and the site of celebrations throughout the year, including the annual Oxnard Mother’s Day Mariachi Festival.
Adjacent to Community Center Park is the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit organization that produces theater, dance, music and art performances, and offers classes and events. From exercise instruction to gaming conventions, the Oxnard Performing Arts Center keeps the community entertained. There is also an art studio with regularly scheduled classes and an event space that is available to rent. The group also partners with The Canyon, a Ventura County-based live entertainment company that regularly hosts well-known live music and comedy acts at the center.
Of course, as this is Oxnard, the beach isn’t far away. Just 4 miles to the west, Oxnard State Beach Park beckons neighborhood residents who want to spend a little time lounging in the California sun, surfing the waves of the Pacific or walking the beach. There is also a sand volleyball court, a playground and picnic areas with grills at the park, so visitors can turn a visit to the beach into a family-friendly event.
History buffs enjoy the informative tours offered at Heritage Square, where meticulously preserved homes from the early 1900s highlight what life was like for the original residents of Oxnard. Trained docents guide visitors through the sites and living history performances offer an immersive experience. Heritage Square also hosts themed tea parties throughout the year, as well as live music performances.

Walk to incredible shopping and dining
Hobson Park East borders downtown Oxnard, so residents here can walk to their favorite local boutiques or catch the latest Hollywood release at the Plaza Stadium Cinemas. The Downtown Oxnard Farmers Market is open every Thursday year-round, offering shoppers a bountiful supply of local produce, as well as baked goods and other goodies. Benches provide relief for feet tired from walking while live music performances entertain. For more specific grocery shopping needs, Vallarta Supermarket is located in the southeastern corner of the neighborhood. When the need for more intensive retail therapy strikes, residents can head to The Collection at River Park, 4 miles north, where a variety of retailers await.
When dining out is on the menu, foodies from all over Ventura County make their way to Carnitas El Rey for their famous carnitas made with freshly griddled tortillas. Fortunately for Hobson Park East residents, they don’t have to travel far for this culinary delight, because it’s right in the neighborhood. For a slightly more elegant night out, Tierra Sur at Herzog Wine Cellars offers a three-course “dining experience” that features expertly prepared meals paired with award-winning wines from Herzog.
