Live along the water in Oyster Creek, where you can wake up and fall asleep to the gentle hums of the creek with the same name. Roughly 1,200 locals call this small city in Brazoria County home. A former fishing village, Oyster Creek, lies a few miles from the Gulf of Mexico, with Houston roughly 60 miles northwest.

Home prices in Oyster Creek range from $180,000 to $650,000. Plenty of empty lots are also for sale, ranging from under $30,000 to $575,000. Large homes with big green manicured lawns, expansive decks and tall boat docks are common in the creek's canal. These waterfront homes dominate the city's market. More inland, large brick ranch-style homes with slanted roofs are prominent. Massive oak trees with the occasional palm tree paint Oyster Creek's canvas. There are also a few RV and mobile home parks in the city.

The Brazosport Independent School District serves the neighborhood. Oyster Creek children can attend several public schools throughout their educational career. The youngest learners can begin at Freeport Elementary for pre-kindergarten through the first grade. Students then can move on to Velasco Elementary School for second through fourth grade before attending Lanier Middle School for fifth and sixth grade. Niche has ranked Velasco Elementary with an overall B rating and Lanier Middle has an overall B-minus rating. From Lainer Middle, students can attend Freeport Intermediate School for their final middle school years. Freeport Intermediate has earned an overall B rating from Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 12-1. For high school, students can attend Brazowoods High School, home of the fighting Buccaneers. Niche ranks Brazowoods High School as the second-best high school in Brazoria County for its teachers. Brazowoods High School has an overall B-plus rating from Niche.

Oyster Creek Municipal Park is a popular outdoor gathering space bordering the creek. Residents can fish from the pier or have a picnic, and when it's warm out, neighborhood kids can cool off at the splash pad. A couple of years ago, the Brazoria National Wildlife Refugee opened a new recreation area around Oyster Creek. The Cannan Bend Recreation Area has a freshwater lake where locals can go fishing. The recreation area is less than 4 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and so the coastal forest attracts Nearctic-neotropical songbirds during their migration of crossing the gulf. During the summertime, residents can spend their days at Surfside Beach, roughly 6 miles south of Oyster Creek.

When hunger strikes, residents can satisfy their appetite at Mi Ranchito Mexican Restaurant. Serving authentic Mexican food, you can get breakfast tacos until the afternoon, fajitas or enchiladas. Locals describe Creek Side Bar, a neighborhood watering hole, as a place with great atmosphere and friendly bartenders. For even more nightlife and restaurants, Dena Pate, a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Ultimate and a lifelong resident of Brazoria County, recommends Lake Jackson, less than 10 miles from Oyster Creek. "The civic center in Lake Jackson has performers every Friday night," Pate says. In Lake Jackson, Oyster Creek residents can also stock up their fridges at Kroger Marketplace, Walmart Supercenter and H-E-B.

Oyster Creek could be your new home if you want to live amongst nature and waterways.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
