Suburban community at the base of the Stanford foothills
At the base of the Stanford foothills, Barron Park is a residential community in Palo Alto, California, offering highly rated schools, striking natural scenery and a suburban lifestyle. “The people who live in Barron Park love Barron Park,” says Molly Foy Rich, a Realtor with Midtown Realty and over 20 years of real estate experience. “It’s different than most neighborhoods—it can have a more rural feeling.” Interconnected residential streets feature multi-million-dollar midcentury homes, and Interstate 280 provides quick access for an easy commute to tech hubs in Silicon Valley. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4, and nearby landmarks include Stanford University and Hospital. “Some people may want to live where all houses are the same with manicured lawns, but this is a neighborhood where you’re going to have more diversity of lot sizes and houses.”

Sundays at the park with Perry
“Cornelis Bol Park is a 13-acre city park in the middle of Barron Park, which is crazy big for Palo Alto,” Foy Rich. Typically referred to as Bol Park by locals, parkgoers here enjoy a volunteer-run garden of native California plants and walking paths shaded by mature oak and redwood tress, like the 2-mile Bol Park Loop, but the park is best known for its iconic celebrity residents. “The donkeys are the best thing about the park; there’s nowhere else in Palo Alto where you’re going to find a park with donkeys.” The beloved donkeys live on a private pasture but can be viewed from afar or during their weekly Sunday walk through the park; Perry, the park’s longest-tenured donkey, was the model for the donkey in the animated movie Shrek. Residents can also hike through the nearby Stanford foothills to see the Stanford Dish, a local landmark where folks can watch the sunrise or sunset.

A diverse range of midcentury homes
“The range of homes here is probably one of the larger ones in Palo Alto," Foy Rich says, "and the neighborhood's unique in the city because it doesn't have sidewalks.” The lush residential streets are lined with mature trees, flourishing gardens and single-family homes. Homes here are typically midcentury cottages that have a mix of architectural details and ranch-style houses; both styles of homes are single-story and range from three to four bedrooms. These midcentury homes range from $2 million to $3 million. There are also a few two-story new traditional homes from the late 20th-century or 2000s with up to five bedrooms that range from $3.5 million to $5.5 million. Lot sizes typically range from 5,000 to 9,000 square feet. Near Route 82, there are also a handful of condos and townhouses available within communities like Barron Square, where residents belong to homeowners association and share a community pool. One- to two-bedroom condos and townhouses range from $1.3 million to $1.6 million.

Barron Park Association events
Residents can join the Barron Park Association, a neighborhood organization that hosts events throughout the year. “Barron Park has a lot of community events that other Palo Alto neighborhoods don’t,” Foy Rich says. The annual Barron Park May Fete Festival is held in May at Bol Park, where residents hold colorful ribbons while dancing around a maypole; festivities also include games, food trucks and meet-and-greet time with the local donkeys. Other community events throughout the year include ice cream socials, movie nights and holiday-themed gatherings like the Halloween Bray Parade and a Diwali celebration.
Neighborhood dining along Route 82
For groceries, residents head to Trader Joe’s at San Antonio Center, about 2 miles east; the outdoor shopping plaza includes department stores like Walmart and Kohl’s and national chain eateries like Chili’s. Residents can also shop at the nearby VA Palo Alto Farmers’ Market, held weekly on Wednesdays from May through November. Local businesses and restaurants line Route 82, like Driftwood Deli and Market, best known for their made-to-order sandwiches. “All the high school kids are obsessed with [the deli],” Foy Rich says. “They have a full espresso bar, serve ice cream and milkshakes and have been there forever. The line is out the door and its worth the wait every single time.”
