Refinery jobs and relatively affordable homes near Houston in Parkwood

Parkwood is a neighborhood in northeast Pasadena, Texas, a suburb of Houston. It is located right on the border of the neighboring community of Deer Park, and just south of Texas Route 225, a major Houston area thoroughfare lined with oil refineries. “There are lots of jobs for refinery workers,” says Yvonne Pruneda, Realtor associate with Nan & Co. Properties, who also grew up in Pasadena. Those jobs are a significant part of the area’s appeal. Home prices are another. “There are some parts of Pasadena that are a little more expensive, but most of the neighborhoods are usually under $300,000,” Pruneda says. The Deer Park Independent School District serves the area and earns an A from Niche.

Ranch-style homes at comparatively low prices

Homes in Parkwood are largely ranch-style homes, though some bi-levels and split-levels are also present. Much of these properties are from the mid-century: the median build year here is 1959. Prices range from $160,000 to $270,000, with a median price well below Houston’s median of $345,000. Homes sell at about the same rate as the national average, spending 53 days on the market on average. Sidewalks, attached garages and carports are common. Well-kept lawns and spaced-out trees of all sizes create the open atmosphere of a classic midcentury American suburb.

Deer Park schools get high marks from Niche

While technically still a Pasadena neighborhood, Parkwood students can attend the Deer Park Independent School District. While Parkwood Elementary School bears the neighborhood’s name and serves kindergarten through second grade, according to GreatSchools, students in this neighborhood are assigned to Deepwater Elementary, a K-through-5 school rated a B-minus by Niche. Deepwater Junior High earns a B-plus. Deer Park High School, which is split into multiple campuses, with grade 9 at North Campus and 10 through 12 at South Campus, earns an A-minus. Wolters Campus, also part of Deer Park High, is an alternative program to which students can apply. Students at Deer Park High can earn dual credit through San Jacinto College. “It’s nearby and accessible,” Pruneda says. “It’s good for people to know about the college."

Two Texas highways connect Parkwood to the Houston area

The Sam Houston Tollway runs along the neighborhood’s eastern edge, and Texas Route 225 runs across Parkwood’s northern border. Houston is about 17 miles away via 225. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is about 27 miles north. HCA Houston Healthcare Southeast is 5 miles from Parkwood. Residents here will probably want a car, as there isn't public transportation.

Recreation includes Deepwater Park Complex, a nature preserve and a theater

The Deepwater Park Complex provides the neighborhood with sports courts and fields, picnic areas and a playground. Softball and baseball games run at Ben Briar Park, south of Parkwood. Residents can head 12 miles southeast to Pasadena’s Armand Bayou Nature Center for a more intensive nature outing. This natural area offers miles of trails for wildlife viewing, kayak tours and various educational activities for visitors. Cinemark Hollywood Pasadena shows the latest blockbusters.

Shopping and dining essentials close to home

While Houston proper isn’t far away, Parkwood residents can get all the essentials close to home. “You can live there and not venture out unless you really want to,” Pruneda says. “Everything you need is here.” Regio Rey and Taqueria Los Agaves serve Mexican food. Chain restaurants line Red Bluff Road, south of the neighborhood. Pasadena has two nearby shopping areas: Macroplaza Mall is about 4 miles away, while Market Center Shopping Center is just over 2 miles away. The Kroger near Market Center is the closest option for groceries.

Pasadena celebrates strawberries and holidays

One of the biggest events in Pasadena is the annual Strawberry Festival, which has run for over 50 years. Some 60,000 attendees flock to the four-day event, which features everything from live music to a beauty pageant, car show and mud volleyball. The city also puts on holiday events, such as a Halloween Monster Mash, a tree-lighting ceremony and an Independence Day celebration.

Important to know

Pasadena has information on its city website about hurricane preparedness and offers an alert system that residents can sign up for. The Houston metro area is on the Gulf Coast, and has suffered flooding, infrastructure damage and power outages during Hurricane Ike in 2008 and Hurricane Beryl in 2024.
