A gated lakeside community with a secluded location and a scenic landscape
On the north shore of San Luis Obispo County’s Lake Nacimiento, the secluded community of Oak Shores is surrounded by rolling coastal hills and lush oak woodlands. “It’s a Central Coast hidden gem, and all about the lake,” says longtime area resident Jim DeMauro, owner and broker at Lake Nacimiento Realty, who has served on the community’s board of directors. “It’s a safe, clean, family environment—not like going to a lake with a ton of huge, fast boats where people are partying and getting drunk." Paso Robles is 30 miles southeast, and it's a nearly 60-mile drive to San Luis Obispo. “If you have to work in Paso or in SLO, it’s a little tricky," DeMauro says, "which is why a lot of the homes here are vacation homes.” The guard-gated community has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average score of 4.

A hub for water recreation with access to community amenities
Lake Nacimiento, often referred to as “Dragon Lake” because of its shape, is a hub for water recreation. Locals can launch their boats from the ramp on the community’s west side or at the main marina, where boat slips are available for storage. Kayaking, wakeboarding and paddleboarding are common activities, and with the lake’s slalom course, water skiing is especially popular. This is the only lake in California stocked with white bass, and anglers can also catch bluegill, crappie, and catfish.
The Oak Shores community also has its own private clubhouse, with two outdoor swimming pools, one for adults and another for kids. Residents can also enjoy a playground, a basketball court and an 18-hole miniature golf course.

Luxury lakefront properties mesh with low key vacation homes
Home construction began in the 1970s, and has continued throughout the 2000s; most of the community’s oldest residences have since been renovated. Small rustic cabins are often used for weekend getaways and summer vacations, while large, luxury builds with floor-to-ceiling windows, large decks and modern finishes are more popular with full-time residents. When set inland, homes between 1,000 and about 2,000 square feet range from around $450,000 to $750,000, while those between 2,000 to 3,000 square feet range from $800,000 to about $1 million. “There’s also a generous number of homes with lake views, as well as some homes right on the lakefront with their own boat docks,” DiMauro says. Luxury lakefront and lake-view estates can range from about $1 million to upward of $2 million. Undeveloped lots are also available for residents looking to build a home of their own.
Community events at the clubhouse
Oak Shores regularly holds community events at its clubhouse, including movie nights, live music on the patio, potlucks and game nights. Every Sunday, the Oak Shores Christian Fellowship Church also holds services here.
A roughly 20-minute commute to a locally owned grocery store and a few dining options
About 13 miles away on the east side of the lake, there’s a locally owned grocery store and a couple of locally owned restaurants. Oak Hill Market is a go-to for groceries, and has a deli counter, bakery and ready-to-eat take-home meals. Next door, Rock’N’Robles Grill & Pizza Kitchen serves specialty pies, bar bites and brews, while at the Lake Life Cafe, residents can enjoy a cup of sustainably sourced coffee alongside a breakfast or lunch sandwich. Inside the community’s clubhouse, the Corner Store Gift Shop sells Oak Shores apparel, accessories and other merchandise.

A car-dependent community with a lack of public transportation
County Route G14, known locally as Interlake Road, is just north of the community, connecting residents with Paso Robles and Highway 101 about 30 miles southeast. San Luis Obispo is less than miles south of Oak Shores via Highway 101. Adventist Health’s Twin Cities Community Hospital is about 34 miles southeast in Templeton, and the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is at the south end of the city of San Luis Obispo.
