The Lakes at Highland Glen offers spacious suburban living

The Lakes at Highland Glen is a planned neighborhood in East Pearland, appealing to buyers seeking new millennium homes along organized streets with decent proximity to Houston or Galveston. “Residents are usually Houston workers,” says Theresa Riddle, a Pearland local and Realtor with Gusto Real Estate. “There’s easy access to major freeways, [it’s] minutes away from downtown and the Texas Medical Center, and there’s excellent schools.” The neighborhood is decorated with 10 manmade lakes, which gives the area its name. Homes here are maintained with bylaws from the Lakes at Highland Glen Community Association.

Mid-sized new millennium homes for sale

“It’s a good neighborhood with pretty quick turnover,” says Riddle. “People get country living with city convenience.” The community features a market of single-family homes built in the last twenty years, ranging from $350,000 to $600,000. These are mostly mid-sized brick Craftsman-style homes and one-story ramblers with attached garages. Streets are grid-patterned and end in cul-de-sacs, and there are gated community options in the east end of the neighborhood, across Pearland Parkway. The CAP Index Crime Score for the neighborhood is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4 out of 10.

A community pool, nearby trails and Golfcrest Country Club

The Lakes of Highland Glen Community Pool is central to the area and features a small waterslide. It’s maintained by the local HOA, and membership is limited to residents and their registered guests. A block east of home is Preserve at Highland Glen Park, a neighborhood green space with a playground and covered picnic pavilion. This park also allows access to the Clear Creek Trail, a paved multipurpose path that stretches south for five miles. There’s also the private Golfcrest Country Club four miles south, where members can tee off on the 18-hole championship course, swim laps at the pool or play tennis, pickleball and bocce on several courts.

Shopping corridors along Pearland Parkway and I-45

Locals can head down Pearland Parkway to browse H-E-B for groceries or department stores like T.J. Maxx, Ross and Rack Room Shoes. There is a major retail strip along the Interstate 45 and Sam Houston Tollway interchange, just a couple of miles north of home, featuring chain restaurants, a Home Depot and the AMC Gulf Pointe 30 movie theater to catch the latest hit movies. Central Texas Style Barbecue is on Broadway Street and has served hickory-smoked ribs and brisket to the Pearland community since 1969.

Pearland flood prevention infrastructure

As a Gulf Coast community, The Lakes at Highland Glen is prone to hurricanes and flooding in certain months. The City of Pearland’s Public Works Department has a dedicated Drainage Division, which has committed to building miles of storm drains and other infrastructure over the last few years to prevent damage from hurricanes and floods.

Pearland public schools and nearby University of Houston-Clear Lake at Pearland

Pearland Independent School District serves the neighborhood and is ranked the No. 1 best school district in Brazoria County. Students can attend Barbara Cockrell Elementary, Leon H. Sablatura Middle School, Pearland Junior High School West and Pearland High School, all of which receive A-ratings from Niche. The University of Houston-Clear Lake at Pearland is a public institution just north of The Lakes at Highland Glen. It hosts many undergraduate and graduate degree programs in areas like STEM, healthcare and social work.

Commuters head to Houston and Texas Medical Center in half an hour

Due to the lack of public transit options in Pearland, residents of The Lakes at Highland Glen are car-dependent. Locals can reach Downtown Houston after a 22-mile commute north on I-45, while the Texas Medical Center is 18 miles away, for locals and employees to access the world’s largest medical complex. Locals are also a 44-mile drive to Galveston for a Gulf Coast beach or fishing trip. William P. Hobby Airport is seven miles north for domestic and international flights.
