Sitting on the confluence of the Hull Creek and the Lackawanna River, Blakely is a historic borough in Lackawanna County. Named after the naval hero Johnston Blakely, this riverbank community has developed into a welcoming and supportive neighborhood with lively events and businesses. “This is a very close-knit community with lots of care for the people,” says Fawn Contrecas, who is the head of e-services at the Valley Community Library. “We greet people when we meet on trails and we have local shops for many things, which makes Blakely very homey.”

Eclectic architecture in Blakely Borough
Blakely’s residents tend to be “generational homeowners and long-term residents who are family and community-oriented, so there’s not much inventory on the market,” says Janine Christian, a real estate agent with over 10 years of experience at ERA One Source Realty. Many homes were built between the 1920s and the 1970s in various architectural styles; one will find Colonial Revival, Cape Cod and Foursquares sitting next to Tudor Revival and Victorian houses. Densely populated trees paint a green backdrop against the historic homes, and properties tend to be well-maintained with nicely kept lawns. Single-family properties with three bedrooms are priced between $150,000 and $300,000.
Education in Blakely
“The neighborhood has some of the top schools in the region,” says Christian. Families in Blakely are served by the Valley View School District. Area schools include Valley View Elementary School and Valley View Intermediate School, both have B-minus scores from Niche. Valley View Middle School is rated C by Niche. Valley View High School is ranked B-minus with 87% of students retaining proficiency in reading and 72% in math, indicating high performance in academics.
Health and wellness by the Lackawanna River
The Blakely Borough Recreation Complex is the community’s largest recreation area with comprehensive sports facilities and programs. One can explore activities such as boating, fishing and kayaking by the Lackawanna River or walking the scenic Lackawanna Heritage Trail. The sports complex has basketball, tennis and volleyball courts and softball fields for games and tournaments. Additional public parks include Swansea, Brook Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Fields offering playgrounds and sports amenities. Families can also go skiing at the Montage Mountain Resorts.
Popular shops on Main Street
Visit the local staple grocery store Quinn’s Market for fresh produce and go to Dickson City’s Walmart or The Home Depot for household essentials. Blakely’s Main Street is home to many neighborhood businesses such as mini marts, gift shops, a hardware store and a pharmacy. Notably the Old & Brew, a popular café known for roasts and baked goods, also sells vintage kitchenware; the retro thrift store Eclectic City Vintage is located inside the coffee shop. Coccetti's is a classic brunch spot known for steak and cheese egg benedicts and cinnamon sugar French toast. Joseph’s Restaurant serves casual Italian fare such as homemade egg pappardelle and chicken francaise.
Local and county festivities in downtown Scranton
“The Valley Community Library is a warm place to meet people; we have story time for small children, writing programs and arts and crafts workshops every week, and people can always come in just for the board games or the computers,” Contrecas elaborates. The library also organizes special events such as the holiday movie marathon, the Q-Club Holiday Party and fundraisers to support charitable causes. The community fridge outside the library is often fully stocked by local restaurants and is there for anyone in need. The Dickson City Civic Center Winter Craft and Vendor Fair helps support and feature artists and crafters. Lackawanna County also hosts a plethora of events in downtown Scranton; festivals such as the Santa Parade and the Lackawanna County Fair celebrate the region’s rich heritage while bringing community members closer together.

Important to know
Pennsylvania currently has 9,977 abandoned mines that pose environmental or health risks. Acid mine drainage (AMD), which is the flow of acidic water containing heavy metals, through abandoned mines causes drinking water and soil contamination and infrastructure corrosion. Under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977, the state is implementing strip mine reclamation projects to reclaim hazards such as AMD and to revive the habitats in abandoned mine areas.
