Wrightwood caters to both vacationers and full-time residents

Wrightwood lived a few lives before it became the intimate San Gabriel Mountains community it is today. The community was an 1800s cattle town before evolving into a vacation destination by the early 20th century. "It was once a little secret to old Hollywood up in the mountains," says Deborah Nielson, a Realtor with Park Place Realty and longtime resident. Today, its presence of full-time residents continues to grow, thanks to abundant outdoor recreation, cabin-style homes and a small downtown district that underscore its alpine-like allure. “It’s like a little postage stamp town, and everyone just gathers around one another,” Nielson says.

Moutain High Resort, James Lake and Wrightwood Country Club

Mountain High Resort, 4 miles west, is a community staple and employs many locals during its winter busy season. Visitors can glide down its 16 different slopes that stretch across the mountain, go snow tubing or warm up with a hot chocolate from inside the lodge. Paddlers kayak Jackson Lake 4 miles farther in the same direction, and nearby trailheads like Inspiration Point carve more space for exploring local wildlife. Closer to home, Wrightwood Country Club on Oriole Road offers members sporting facilities and Twin Lakes, which fills during summer with swimmers and little ones taking turns on the floating slide.

Cabin-style homes fill the community

Residential avenues mimic the rise and fall of the mountain valley’s terrain, where homes built over the last 100 years blend in with high-reaching pines. “The homes are not cookie cutter and most of the cabins are custom built. They go from old little cabins to beautiful high-end homes.” Properties near the town’s center sit closely together, while those deeper in the woodlands can come with just under a full acre of land. Commonalities include A-line roofs and large windows for viewing the surrounding terrain. Nielson notes that although vacation rentals appear throughout, the presence of full-time homeowners has increased over the last five years. Prices vary greatly, from $300,000 for a one-bedroom property to just under $1 million for a larger, more recently built home on more acreage. The community also scores a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Residents dine in Downtown Wrightwood and shop in Victorville

In Wrightwood’s downtown pocket, local businesses sit within multi-colored, cabin-style buildings. Residents can stop by a handful of gift shops and clothing boutiques or pick up a pair of skis from McGrath’s Ski & Board Rentals. Several restaurants also dot the district, including Evergreen Café & Racoon Saloon. “They’ve been around forever,” Nielson says. “They decorate for each holiday and go all out for Halloween.” She also notes The Yodeler as another longstanding community favorite. Patrons can enjoy craft beer, traditional bar grub and occasional live music. Wrightwood Fine Foods supplies groceries nearby, and most head to Victorville 35 miles northeast to shop at The Mall of Victor Valley and nearby big-box stores.

Folks gather for Mountaineer Days and Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Contest

For 60 years, folks have gathered in mid-July for Mountaineer Days. “All the old-timers dress up as mountaineers and run around for the weekend,” Neilson says. Alongside live music and food vendors, attendees can expect dozens of activities, from watermelon eating contests to mechanical bulls and axe throwing. When October rolls around, the Wrightwood Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Contest. “Those who do get to walk around with spoons and cups, taste the chili and vote,” Nielson says.

Kindred Hospital Rancho is the nearest medical facility, located just north of the airport.

Wilfire risks and heavy snowfall

Due to its location, Wrightwood is susceptible to wildfires. “I’ve been through four wildfires here and only evacuated for one,” Nielson says. “None of them have ever come through town, just along the outer edges,” Nielson says. “Our firefighters come in and put them right out.” She also mentions that aside from heavy snow in winter, which folks hunker down for, the weather is relatively mild.
