Rich with German history

Founded by German families in 1683, Germantown is one of Philadelphia’s most historic neighborhoods and has played a significant role in shaping the United States. Realtor John O’Connell of Elfant Wissahickon Realtors says, “There’s a tremendous historical aspect to the neighborhood. It’s what a lot of people love about living here.” A battle broke out during the Revolutionary War in the backyard of the historic Cliveden estate, which still stands today. Germantown was also the birthplace of the antislavery movement, helping to pave the way to freedom for many slaves thanks to the Johnson House, a station for the Underground Railroad. It’s now a museum where visitors can learn about the home’s history, serving as a testament to the neighborhood’s welcoming nature. O’Connell says “I grew up in Germantown. There’s a sense of harmony and it’s very neighborly.”

Architecturally stunning homes

Today, Germantown is full of charming older homes. O’Connell says, “I really believe Germantown has some of the most beautiful architecture in the entire city. This place really sprung up in the Victorian era with beautiful homes that have made it through the years.” That includes stunning estates with elaborate stonework exhibiting an old-world feel along with several Dutch Colonial twins along tree-lined sidewalks. Joining these German-style homes are many traditional Philadelphia rowhomes from the late 1800s and early 1900s. With homes being close together, most have small yards and require street parking. Prices in Germantown can start as low as $140,000 with some reaching up to $800,000.

Visit the Emerald of Germantown

Vernon Park is a leafy, urban outdoor space that’s also known as the “Emerald of Germantown.” The park features a historic home from 1803 and lots of monuments to check out while strolling through the paved walkways. Along with an open green space, kids can enjoy running around the playground. The park also frequently holds events throughout the year, including the Fall Community Bazaar & Flea Market, featuring dozens of vendors and live music.

Charming retail on cobblestone streets

The charm of Germantown extends to the neighborhood’s main commercial area on Germantown Avenue where several local shops and restaurants line the old cobblestone street. Locals like to start their morning with a specialty coffee and a book from the library at Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee & Books, a frequent spot for discussions with touring authors. There are a variety of lunch and dinner options, from slow-cooked barbecue at Deke’s or vegan soul food at The Nile Café. Attic Brewing Company is a popular hangout spot complete with drinks, live music, comedy shows and other events every week. The American Dream is evident through the stories of many of the neighborhood’s local businesses. Local grocery options serve as evidence that the American Dream is still alive and well. A&N House of Produce, for example, was opened by a husband and wife who emigrated from the former Soviet Union and has been serving groceries to the community since 1999. Merzbacher’s is another option that started as a man delivering homemade bread on a bike and eventually grew into a full-fledged bakery where visitors can get an original Philly Muffin along with several other breads.

Transportation

Germantown has convenient transportation options through SEPTA. Residents can take a bus to get around town and surrounding areas or travel even further by hopping on one of two commuter rail lines. Center City is about 8 miles away. And one perk, according to O’Connell, is you can get there by avoiding all the highways. He says, “Not only is it a short drive, but it’s a very pleasant drive. You can take these beautiful park roads and drive along the Schuylkill River.”
