A network of organizations beside the Delaware River

Touching the Delaware River and split down the middle by Pennypack Creek, Holmesburg is a neighborhood with community parks and rowhouses near downtown amenities. While technically in Philadelphia, "Holmesburg gives you more of a suburban feel, while you still have easy access to Center City," says Mike Cirillo, a local Realtor with Better Homes Realty Group. The community also contains a mix of local businesses, nonprofits, industrial companies and public buildings. The Holmesburg Library has been a part of the community for over a century. "The library was founded in 1867 and has been at this current location since 1907," says librarian David Koch. "Some of our most notable services are youth programs, like our after-school program and the anime club, for teens. We also have adult programs like tai chi." The Catholic Charities, a local organization on Jackson Street, manages a food bank. Next door is Clarifi, a neighborhood nonprofit that offers financial counseling services. Virtually all residences are north of State Road, and real estate prices are often lower here compared to the rest of the metro area. To the south, closer to the river, are trucking companies, government buildings and the Holmesburg Prison. The prison doesn't impact daily life in Holmesburg. However, industrial sites, like wastewater plants and manufacturers, may affect air quality. There are also several houses of worship inside the neighborhood, including St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church and Holmesburg Baptist Church.

Most residences date between the early 1920s and the 1990s. Rowhouses needing renovation can range in price between $85,000 and $175,000, while move-in ready homes range from $200,000 to $375,000. Frankford Avenue diners

Local shops and restaurants make up most of Frankford Avenue, the neighborhood's main thoroughfare. While the community has many restaurants, the most popular options are casual diners. The two local eateries, Dining Car and Mayfair Diner, offer a retro 1950s-style atmosphere. The restaurants have large breakfast crowds as well as booth and countertop seating. The Liberty Bell Diner, another local favorite, is open 24 hours a day. Shelly's Plaza includes a Dollar Tree, Walgreens and PJP Marketplace for groceries. Maggie's Waterfront Cafe is known for its riverside dining and sunset views over the Delaware River. Other local businesses include small corner markets, laundromats and trucking companies.

Pennypack Park and recreation centers

Pennypack Creek Bridge, also known as Frankford Avenue Bridge, is the oldest roadway bridge in the United States. The structure dates back to 1697, and visitors can view the old stone arches as they explore the creek at Pennypack Park. The green space covers 1,600 acres of meadows, wetlands and woodlands. The onsite trails, popular for hiking and biking, lead to the Delaware River. Looking across the water gives sweeping views of New Jersey. During the summer months at Pennypack Park, the Ed Kelly Amphitheater hosts the Pennypack Music Festival. Thousands of people show up on Wednesdays to enjoy this free concert series featuring local bands. Pleasant Hill Park, a former fish hatchery, is a smaller riverfront space now home to the Linden Avenue Boat Ramp. Farther inland awaits Charles A. Russo Playground and James Ramp Memorial Recreation Center.
