A colorful neighborhood
The Mantua neighborhood is a busy urban community located near the Philadelphia Zoo and several colleges. “One of the highlights of Mantua is its accessibility,” says Mitchell Chellis, owner of Hair Situations Barber Shop. “A few miles south is downtown, north is the art museum, go east for the zoo and west to hospitals and universities. There is always something going on, from bike rides to jogging events.” The colorful neighborhood is as well known for its brightly painted murals that adorn many playgrounds and buildings as it is for its bustling student population. “The area housing really is two-fold,” says Karl Klotzbach, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “There’s a lot of student housing here. And because it is located so near Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania, it’s known as University City.” Chellis agrees. “There’s a bit of everybody here and all the college students in the community keep it young and fresh. That’s one of the highlights of Mantua — its diversity of people,” says Chellis.

Row houses all around
The streets of this West Philadelphia neighborhood are lined with row houses built in the early 1900s, most featuring Italianate architecture with Victorian and Second Empire influences. Some homes have stoops leading directly from the front door to the sidewalk, while others have front porches and small front yards. Few homes have private driveways. Home prices vary, depending on the condition and size of the property. From newly renovated row houses under 1,200 square feet to larger, more contemporary row homes and some duplexes, home prices average between $150,000 to $550,000.

There are some great new restaurants coming into the University City area that I am excited to try. Although center city has more to offer, there are good drink specials for university students.

I've had some close calls in the particular area that I was in. College students get mugged all the time in University City, as it is very close to West Philadelphia.
