Urban living in North Philadelphia
Ogontz is a walkable, urban community in North Philadelphia, with blocks of gridded streets lined by a mix of rowhomes, corner stores and community spaces. The neighborhood sits along Broad Street, which is one of the city’s most trafficked streets and provides convenient commutes into Center City Philadelphia. “You can’t beat the commute,” says Jonathan Amir Jackson, a Realtor with Keller Williams Real Estate who specializes in the Philadelphia County area. “It’s one of the main reasons people move to Ogontz.” Besides being less than a 10-mile drive from Center City’s lively business and entertainment districts, Ogontz features urban green spaces and a host of local businesses.
A mix of 1920s rowhouses and twin homes
Blocks of rowhomes and twin homes fill the neighborhood’s sidewalk-lined streets. Cottage-style rowhomes with stone exteriors and rounded entryways sit alongside traditional, Philadelphia-style rowhouses with brick exteriors, oriel windows and columned front porches. Most properties were built around the 1920s and feature walk-out basements that lead to rear driveways and attached garages, although street parking is the norm in some parts of the neighborhood. Prices range from around $105,000 to $315,000, depending on the size and condition of the home. Ogontz has a CAP Index Crime Score of 5 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. This overall Crime Score is driven by higher-than-average scores for violent crimes, even as Ogontz has low scores for property crime. In 2021, the City of Philadelphia released a five-year gun violence reduction plan as part of the Philadelphia Roadmap to Safer Communities. The Belfield Recreation Center collaborates with local non-profits like CeaseFirePA to host anti-violence initiatives for residents of all ages.
Convenient commercial corridor along Broad Street
Shops and restaurants line Broad Street, which runs north-south along the neighborhood’s eastern border. Aldi is less than a mile from most residents, and corner stores like Mecca Fresh Meat Market sell the essentials. Local favorites include Ron’s Caribbean Café, a casual spot serving traditional Jamaican dishes such as goat curry and oxtail. City View Pizza & Grill is a counter-serve spot known for its Philadelphia-style cheesesteaks, while the local chain Crab Du Jour specializes in bagged seafood boils. Over on Ogontz Avenue, Soul Kitchen 5935 serves southern-style platters down the street from A & L Deli Grocery, a neighborhood store selling groceries and made-to-order hoagies.
JROTC program at Martin Luther King High School
Students attend the Philadelphia City School District. Kids in the northeastern corner of Ogontz begin their education at Prince Hall School, but most children in the neighborhood attend the Joseph Pennell School. Both elementary schools earn a C-minus from Niche. All students move on to the C-minus-rated Gen. Louis Wagner Middle School and Martin Luther King High School, which receives a D-plus grade. The high school’s JROTC program utilizes a military framework to educate students on American history, citizenship, government and more. Residents are less than a mile north of La Salle University, a private Catholic university with an emphasis on faith-based learning.
Community programs at the Morris Estate Cultural Center
Kemble Park anchors the neighborhood with eight acres of green space along Ogontz Avenue. The park has a swing set, two basketball courts and a series of paved paths for outdoor exercisers to explore. Further north is the Morris Estate Cultural Center, which features a playground, basketball courts and an outdoor pool open from June to August. The facility also hosts various after-school programs, summer camps and workout classes in its multipurpose rooms. Over at the David Cohen Ogontz Library, shelves of books and rows of computers are free for public use. “We sell books and DVDs for 25 cents each. Every two months, whatever doesn’t sell is given out for free,” says Mary, an employee at the David Cohen Ogontz Library. “We also have after-school programs where we help kids with homework.”
Summer concerts at David Cohen Ogontz Library
In addition to selling books, the David Cohen Ogontz Library hosts various events throughout the year. “When it gets to summer, we do more cookouts, and people can purchase food from our friend's group,” Mary says. “We also have a little bit of concerts. We’ve been doing them every year since I’ve been here, over 20 years.”
Olney Transportation Center offers bus and subway service
With Broad Street leading 7 miles south to Center City Philadelphia, Ogontz offers access to Philly’s central entertainment and business district. The Olney Transportation Center sits along Broad Street, and SEPTA provides local bus and train service around Philadelphia. The thoroughfare also connects residents to major highways such as U.S. Route 1, and Philadelphia International Airport is less than a 20-mile drive south.
Proximity to Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital
Residents are about a mile northwest of Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital. The medical center has a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and is a tertiary-care teaching hospital with various residency and fellowship training programs.
