Neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia County 19142, 19153
Penrose is a small residential community located within Pennsylvania's largest city. "The neighborhood is centrally located to the amenities in southwest Philly. It's minutes away from PHL airport, a few miles from the Lincoln Financial Field stadium and near the state line for New Jersey," says Kayla Harrell, a Philadelphia native.
Penrose has a blend of single-family homes and multifamily units. Some residences have street parking, while others include driveways and garages. You'll notice a number of rowhouses with small patio gardens and front lawns that add a homey charm to the area. Many of these uniformed rowhouse have Tudor Revival influences. Homes in the community hold an average value of $150,000 to $300,000. However, townhomes over 1,250 square feet generally list around $250,000 or higher.
The School District of Philadelphia serves the students of Penrose. In the morning, kindergarten to fourth-grade residents may head to John M. Patterson Elementary, while Penrose School accepts students up to eighth grade. Both public schools earned a C- on Niche. At John Bartram High, teenagers can participate in afterschool athletic teams such as soccer, bowling, tennis, track and field, baseball or badminton.
Harrell says that neighborhood parks, Suffolk Park and Elmwood Park, are a big part of the Southwest Philadelphia community. Elmwood Park is a 7-acre passive green space with natural trees and paved paths leading to a sculpture in the center. Here, you'll find a unique tribute to American workers. The art installation features blue paving and grey brick reminiscent of the denim clothing worn by laborers of previous generations. Atop the jean-colored stone are cast bronze work button tables with historic quips detailing events within labor history. The piece was commissioned by the city and erected through a joint effort by a local artist, The Friends of Elmwood Park, and the Association for Public Art. Toward the south is Suffolk Park, a well-loved neighborhood gathering space with a small playground and athletic fields. These fields often attract local sporting leagues and friendly matches among residents.
Local residents frequent Penrose Plaza on Island Avenue for their daily needs. You can pick up fresh fruits, vegetables, and pantry items at ShopRite, located south of the community. The area has several dining options, ranging from local eateries to fast food spots for a quick meal. The neighborhood leans toward Caribbean-influenced fare, such as the no-frills diner Jamaica Way or Top Taste, a restaurant serving a mix of island-style and American soul food items. If you're a fan of steamy seafood boil bags, crab cakes, or fried shrimp, try Ocean Crab Cajun Seafood & Bar. The establishment also has lively karaoke nights every other Thursday. Willkay's can satisfy almost any sweet tooth with satisfying options, from milkshakes and gelati to sugary funnel cakes.
The community is home to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, featuring an award-winning collection of classic cars. Those looking to strike out can head over to V&S Elmwood Lanes for a perfect game of bowling. Penrose is about a 20-minute drive from Center City. To the north lies the Elmwood SEPTA subway station, providing easy access to the rest of Philadelphia.
