Take a tough northeastern city and drop a hometown suburb into the muscle of all that big city commotion — that’s Roxborough. “Roxborough has a town feel. It’s like a town inside the city,” says Lisa Murphy, a Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line, who was raised in Roxborough. “I grew up in a spot called the Valley. I was there back when we didn’t have an area code.” The neighborhood, off in Philadelphia’s northwest corner, certainly has an area code now – 267 – and a congenial personality that’s grown out of what once was 19th-century farmland flanking the Wissahickon Creek. The neighborhood is bordered by the Manayunk neighborhood, a former industrial district that has morphed over the years into a thriving community of 200 small businesses mixed with residential homes. The area is also local to Germantown, about 10 minutes, another thriving Philadelphia neighborhood.

Different styles of housing a ll about, when available
As much as things have changed, so much about these parts remains the same. Sure, the farms are gone; they have been for a while. But the neighborly vibe and homespun flavor have been and remained in place for a good while, providing the backdrop for generations of warm and wholesome memories. “A lot of people growing up knew each other,” Murphy recalls. “We had football teams: Roxborough would play Roman. Your friends would be on one team, and your brother would be on another. It was a really great place to grow up.” Even today, prospective homebuyers seek out the community with its neat houses and well-kept facades, numerous detached, single-family homes, row homes and a ubiquitous array of twin houses with two homes connected by a common wall. Realtor Will Catlett of Century 21 Advantage Gold-South Philadelphia points out that many of the dwellings in the area have garages or driveways, easing the strain of trying to find parking on the city streets. He adds that there are a few HOAs in the area. The CAP Index crime score for the area is 4 out of 10, which mirrors the national average. And, while housing in the area is in demand, Catlett said some of the homes are dated or “non-relevant” home styles. There are also parks galore; even dogs have a park and space that encourages walking.
Plenty of shopping and eateries are nearby
After a day of enjoying live music, some locals head to some of the many eateries in and near Roxborough, including The Goat’s Beard, which features American fare. The White Yak almost exclusively features vegan and vegetarian dishes. The New Ridge Brewing Company includes fresh dishes and English-style beers. This eatery is also located on Ridge Avenue, which is in the heart of Roxborough. The Ivy Ridge Shopping Center, which is within the neighborhood’s borders, has a Target, Starbucks, Fine Wine & Good Spirits and Dukin’.
Lots of music in the summer seasons
The neighborhood’s pride and joy would be historic Gorgas Park in the heart of Roxborough. It is the site of a bucket full of concerts, movies and special events, including the annual Roxtoberfest, which features rides for kids, games booths, food trucks and live music. “There’s something for everyone,” says Enslin III. There are lots of events, including summer concerts.

Sports teams, pro and amateur, are in demand
It's no secret that Philadelphians are passionate about their sports teams. After plying your trade, there’s plenty to anticipate returning to. Not the least of which is the abundance of parks and ballfields where people relax and play. There’s the Al Pearlman Sports Complex, run by the city’s Parks and Recreation department, featuring fields for baseball, football and soccer, plus a clubhouse that hosts community events year-round. Salvatore Pachella Field hosts sports, too. The neighborhood’s pride and joy, though, would be historic Gorgas Park in the heart of Roxborough, the site of a bucket full of concerts, movies and special events, including the annual Roxtoberfest, which features rides for kids, games booths, food trucks and live music. “There’s something something for everyone,” says Enslin III. “There are lots of events, including summer concerts.
Great commuting options
Folks live in Roxborough because, from here, it's easy to reach where they make their living. Close to major roads and public transportation, it’s an easy commute to Center City and the suburbs. In fact, Catlett says one of the area’s draws is its proximity to Center City and City Line, where many folks commute to for work. Both areas can be reached by car or SEPTA public transportation of buses and subway, which has two bus stops and two subway stops in the neighborhood. Interstate 76, also known as the Schuylkill Expressway, is also nearby to access the rest of Philadelphia and the surrounding areas, such as New Jersey and Delaware.
