Lush gardens and ornate homes in Spring Garden

Minutes away from Center City is the sprawling neighborhood of Spring Garden. Once a locus for 19th industrial magnates, the community has since developed into a quiet residential community, lush with community gardens and near Center City. “It’s a great location and the views of the Downtown skyline are amazing; you can see it from the parks or from some homes’ rooftops,” says Mike Bottaro, a local realtor with HomeStarr Realty and $124 million in area sales. Ornate brownstones and contemporary townhomes are minutes away from lush gardens and major thoroughfares.

Classic Italianate Brownstones minutes away from Center City

Much of the residential landscape is made up of two or three-story townhouses. Styles range from Italianate and classic brownstone townhouses to newer construction and contemporary condos. Most homes feature street parking and some even have rooftop terraces. “There’s a lot of new construction in Spring Garden, close to Center City with great walking scores and coffee places,” says local realtor Mike Bottaro. Some condos feature community amenities like fitness centers. Home prices range from $125,000 for a townhome needing some T.L.C., while more established and updated homes can range from $400,000 to $1.5 million.

Fairmount Avenue has several options for dining and big box shopping

The major thoroughfare of Fairmount Avenue runs along the northern section of Spring Garden, home to big box stores and various bars and restaurants. National franchise stores like Giant and Target keep locals stocked with fresh produce and other necessities. Franchise cafés are also found along Fairmount Avenue, like OCF Coffee House, an airy modern coffee shop with built-in garage-door style windows to let the breeze in during warmer months. Jack’s Firehouse is just down from the café, offering Southern cuisine in a converted 19th-century firehouse. To the east along Broad Street is Clementine’s Stable Café, a sleek and contemporary restaurant serving elevated American fare.

Volunteer-led community garden and playground

The community’s name is derived from the massive community garden and public park space at its center. The Spring Gardens has been volunteer-led and maintained since 1995, providing over 180 plots for gardening and organizing regular events such as membership meetings and community dinners. The Philadelphia Horticultural Society has supported the gardens through its urban greening initiative, hoping to plant more greenery in Philadelphia communities suffering from the urban heat island effect. Just south of the gardens is the Roberto Clemente Playground, named after the first Latin-American baseball player to be honored in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Children can clamber around the playground while locals play pickup basketball or relax on the field, which offers views of the Center City skyline. Dog owners can play catch or take their pets on runs at the neighboring Green Street Dog Park. Thousands of paintings and other artworks are displayed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, less than a mile west along Fairmount Avenue.
