Urban residential community with verdant retreats
Bordered by the expansive Wissahickon Valley Park, known for miles of scenic hiking trails, Wissahickon is a small urban residential community in northwest Philadelphia. On any given day, locals can explore restaurants and breweries in neighboring Manayunk, also called the yunk, escape the city with a creekside stroll, or enjoy a quiet evening at home. “Everybody knows it’s crick,” says Lisa Murphy, a local Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry. “You would say to your friends, ‘I’m taking a walk back to the crick.’” Blending suburban notes atop its urban underpinnings, this community offers a quaint escape about 8 miles from Center City’s bustling streets.

La Noce is a small, shaded pocket park with a playground packed with kids after school. Yet the community’s real gem is the 1,800-acre Wissahickon Valley Park. “It’s a super popular spot for runners and bikers,” says Suzi King, local Realtor with Keller Williams Real Estate Media, who has 20 years of experience in the area. The park boasts dozens of trails stretching for miles that offer an urban escape. Residents can climb up 100 granite steps along Freeland Avenue to reach the Wissahickon Bike Trail, a paved creekside path. Others can explore one of the various rugged dirt trails, like Lover’s Leap, or one of the many historic landmarks scattered throughout. The Monastery Stables also keep the equestrian history in the area alive and well. For a different greenery scene, the member-based Walnut Lane Golf Course is on the western side of Wissahickon Valley. Other road give way to twin duplexes with stately columns and small but welcoming front porches within the same price range. Many properties feature fenced-in backyards, and street parking is the norm, but a few enjoy private driveways. Stand-alone colonials and Victorian-style homes are few and far between, with prices ranging from the $300,000s to the mid $500,000s.
