Prominent peaks define the Shandaken landscape

The Catskill High Peaks sit in upstate New York, consisting of 35 total summits within the mountainous landscape. Four of them lie within the neighborhood of Shandaken, not quite the global Seven Summits, but each still stand 3,720 feet or taller. Despite Slide Mountain’s status as the range’s coup de grace at 4,180 feet, Panther Mountain’s prominence might be Shandaken’s most defining feature. Its entire scope sits in central Shandaken, and the base is mostly surrounded by a central roadway that forms an irregular circle amidst the wilderness. “It’s drawing the same people, people looking to turn off from the city and completely be removed,” says Karina Galeano, a real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Hudson Valley North. “I don’t think they mind so much that there’s no cell service out there.” Climbing is popular there regardless of season, and many aspire to join the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club by summiting all 35 peaks. “Depending on where you are in Shandaken, you’re super close to a lot of the best Catskill hiking,” says Megan Brenn-White, the founder and CEO of the Upstate Curious Team. “That’s what a lot of people like about it.” At the end of either the northern or southern approach routes, and after trekking past two false summits, climbers are rewarded at the true top of the mountain with vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Recreation on the slopes of Panther Mountain

With Panther Mountain occupying most of central Shandaken, residents aren’t very far from taking to its slopes or the other mountains in the area. Slide Mountain Wilderness, branching off of its namesake, encompasses nearly 50,000 acres and allows for fishing, camping, hiking and regulated hunting. “Panther Mountain is a big outlet for recreation, absolutely,” Galeano says. “There’s mountain biking, trails, waterfalls, watering holes and just scenic views as well. They have different levels – whether you're an advanced hiker or beginner hiker, and they have levels for kids.” Other popular spots include the Giant Ledge trailhead and the Esopus Creek, a local favorite for fishing and tubing. Glenbrook Park, in northern Shandaken, has sports facilities for baseball and basketball, along with a dog park and playground.

Resorts and world-record-holding landmarks

In northwestern Shandaken, Belleayre Mountain serves as one of the biggest recreational hubs in the region. Summer activities include gondola rides, climbing, hiking, disc golf and more, while skiing and snowboarding on the slopes are the most popular pastimes during the winter. It also hosts events, which range from live music to movie showcases. Near the eastern edge of Shandaken and off Route 28, the world’s largest kaleidoscope stands in a former grain silo towering more than 50 feet over the landscape. The Emerson Kaleidoscope is open six days a week, and visitors head into the silo at floor level to take in the psychedelic and morphing colors and shapes within.

Isolated homes and cabins on the mountainside

Homes in Shandaken are almost entirely concentrated around the northern half of Panther Mountain. Mountain cabins and similar architecture are the most common styles in Shandaken, lending themselves to the wilderness-filled surroundings. Many houses here serve as second homes, offering retreats for residents. Most properties sit on Route 28 or on several roads branching off of it, and are often spaced apart. “There’s a lot of second-home type things there,” Brenn-White says. “There’s log cabins, A-frames, little cottages and old farmhouses. A lot of things were three seasons, because it’s not very populated there.” Prices vary widely and can span anywhere from near $200,000 to $1 million or higher, largely dependent on location and style. Capes and ranch-style homes tend to list for under $500,000, but more ornate cabins and retreats typically fall anywhere from $300,000 to over the million-dollar mark.

Restaurants adorned with the character of the Catskills

Peekamoose Restaurant & Tap Room is one of the more popular eateries in Shandaken, established in a former farmhouse with an interior infused with elements evoking the surrounding wilderness. “Peekamoose is one of those restaurants that’s been around for a long time,” Brenn-White says, adding it’s especially busy on weekends.“It’s really awesome. It’s a lot of farm-to-table and seasonal things. It’s a lot of hearty stuff..” East of the Peekamoose, J. Rocco’s Creekside Grill serves up steaks and burgers. The restaurant has a barn-like exterior and sits along the Esopus on Route 28. Groceries sit on shelves at the Hannaford in West Hurley, which is between 15 and 30 miles away depending on location in Shandaken.

A main state route tracing Panther Mountain

Route 28 runs through much of eastern Shandaken and carves along the northern base of Panther Mountain, eventually kicking northward as it runs through Pine Hill and out of the neighborhood’s northwestern side. “Route 28 is actually a very scenic route,” Galeano says. “It goes from Kingston all the way up, so you can just hop on that route and go north or south. It’s convenient in that way.” The road is also used as a route for buses that run all the way down to New York City. Depending on residents’ location in Shandaken, the city of Kingston sits between about 25 and 35 miles east, as does access to the New York State Thruway.
