Phoenix Country Club homes are distinct for their breadth and privacy
Insulated behind barred gates, Phoenix Country Club is a neighborhood that fills a unique lane at the heart of Arizona’s capital. This community offers sizable, custom-built estates distinctly different from the surrounding neighborhoods' relatively modest bungalows and Spanish Colonials. All homes have quick access to the golf course and other country club amenities, plus the attractions around the wider area. The privacy and location are the biggest draws to Phoenix Country Club, says area Realtor Carol Royse. “It’s close to downtown Phoenix and the financial district, so you’ve got lots of good restaurants. Some of the better private schools are there,” says Royse, who is the leader of the Carol Royse Team with Your Home Sold Guaranteed Realty and has about 40 years of industry experience.
Established houses come with space and attract lots of interest
Homes around Phoenix Country Club were largely built in the early to mid-20th century. All of them are custom builds, so the architecture varies, from Spanish-style to ranch. But the floor plans average about 4,500 square feet and many houses have been updated. Lots are roomy as well — it’s common to get at least half an acre, complete with a pool out back and sometimes a guesthouse. Some properties offer views of the golf course. Homes in this gated portion of Phoenix Country Club sell for between $1.5 million and $5.3 million and typically go quickly. “Because they rarely hit the market, they don’t stay on the market long," Royse says. A separate development along Evergreen Street is called Country Club Terrace and it's not gated. Homes there feature midcentury ranch styles that are more typical of the region. They sell for $450,000 to $600,000.
Country Club golf course has an illustrious history
Neighborhood residents aren’t required to have a country club membership, but many do, Royse says. The club dates to 1899, and its 18-hole golf course hosted the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open for 54 years until 1986. “It’s very iconic,” Royse says. “It’s the oldest one in the area. Jack Nicklaus played there. Some of the most famous golfers of our time played there.” The course is still the annual site of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in November, the final event on the schedule for PGA Tour Champions, a circuit for golfers aged 50 and older. Besides golf, the club has 10 lighted tennis courts, three pools, a fitness center and a restaurant. City green spaces, including Virginia Park and Longview Park, are within 3 miles of the country club and both have playgrounds.
Fireworks, campouts and more take over the club from time to time
Residents who are country club members have access to the assortment of annual events there, including a Fourth of July celebration with fireworks, an Easter brunch and egg hunt, and a father and child campout. The neighborhood is just about 3 miles from the site of the Arizona State Fair, a more than monthlong fall event with food, rides, concerts and a rodeo. A downtown farmers market on Saturdays draws dozens of vendors.
Downtown has sports, bars and lots of places to eat
For those living in Phoenix Country Club, a night on the town can be as simple as a quick drive south. This community is just under 3 miles from downtown Phoenix, where locals can shop, sit down for a steak at Wren & Wolf or enjoy a wood-fired pizza at Pizzeria Bianco, whose founder, Chris Bianco, was featured on the Netflix show “Chef's Table: Pizza." “There’s some really fun bars down there, too,” Royse says. “A lot of the younger people visit downtown Phoenix because it’s very walkable.” In fact, everything's so close that walking to Chase Field for a Diamondbacks baseball game or PHX Arena for a Suns basketball game after a meal downtown is entirely doable. Downtown has many other attractions, too, like the Arizona Science Museum and Symphony Hall. “Right there, you’ve got just about anything you could want,” Royse says. One of the closest grocery stores is Fry's, about 3 miles from Phoenix Country Club.
Brophy and Xavier are well-regarded private schools in the area
The neighborhood is zoned for public schools including Longview Elementary, which carries a C grade on Niche and is part of the the C-rated Osborn School District No. 8. Longview features prekindergarten through sixth grade and offers a dual language program in English and Spanish. The C-rated Osborn Middle also has a dual language program, plus sports teams ranging from flag football to track. Phoenix Country Club is across Thomas Road from the C-plus-rated North High, in the C-plus-rated Phoenix Union High School District. North High extracurriculars include a robotics club and a culinary student organization. Brophy College Preparatory, an all-boys institution for Grades 6 to 12, and Xavier College Preparatory, an all-girls school for Grades 9 to 12, are private options in the area. Both Brophy and Xavier have A-plus Niche ratings, and they are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on the site’s list of the best Catholic high schools in the state. “They’re very desirable,” Royse says.
Valley Metro provides multiple ways to get around
The Valley Metro light rail system is accessible just outside the neighborhood at the Thomas/Central Avenue station. The light rail runs through downtown and into the nearby cities of Tempe and Mesa. Several stops in the Valley Metro bus system are nearby as well. The country club is a mile from Interstate 10, a route to the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, 6 miles away. Phoenix Country Club is within 3 miles of four medical centers, including Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix and the Phoenix Children's Hospital-Thomas Campus.
